Thanks for the feedback... very useful. I agree on the shadow blocking, I didn't notice it when I shot, but man, it's really a nuisance after the fact. I was shooting at -2/3 EV to keep the highlights from blowing out and consequently with a bright day, the shadows were very dark. If it was stills, I know what I'd do in PS CS4, but FCP is new to me and I'm not sure how effective post adjustments would be. All part of the learning curve, I suppose.
