I have used a few 35mm with my GF1 and the results have been pleasing to my eye: (1) Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 35mm f2.8; (2) Ernst Leitz GmbH Wetzlar - Summaron 3.5cm f3.5; (3) Leica Summicron - M 35mm f2 Aspherical. The first 2 were picked up for very reasonable prices on the used market.
Also picked up a used Voigtlander Nokton Classic SC 40mm f1.4 which produces outstanding pictures with the GF1. If you are looking for a a fast lens close to the 35mm instead of waiting for the expensive (even on the used market) 35mm f1.2 the 40mm has gotten some great reviews and once again a ton of samples can be seen on Flickr of m4/3 with the 40/1.4
You have more discipline than I have if you are holding out for the 35/1.2. :angel:
I would rather have something in my hands today and put away for the expensive (dream) lens in the future.
Once again, good luck in choosing what is right for you.

The VC 40/1.4 is sometimes available used on the 'for sale' forum or ebay and can be found at reasonable price.
I do love the sharp edge on the petals, the color and bokeh in this shot.

Do a search for reviews and I believe you will find a number of positive comments regarding this small and versatile lens. btw, Voigtlander also makes the 35/1.4 but asking price on that lens is $579.00!

Dan, what is the closest that the CV 40mm f1.4 focuses on m4/3? I have the Leica Summicron-C 40mm f2, but it doesn't focus very closely.
I find the bokeh of the CV 40mm a bit distracting most of time time, which is why I never picked it up. It looks really good in that iris image though.

As far as how close it focuses I will have to put it back on the GF1 and verify the distance. The manufacturer states .7 meters or 27.55 inches.
I will see if I can check it out this evening and if not then the latest I will get to it will be this weekend.
Bokeh is definitely a personal preference. I do know that I like different flavors created by different lenses. Certainly for portraits a smooth bokeh is more appealing to my eye, but with flowers and other subjects, swirls, circles and other shapes work for me.
I enjoy the Bokeh thread since it has plenty of different lens on various cameras to give some samples to help sort things out when looking for a certain bokeh look.

. . . . . glad I could be of some help. Hopefully you find the lens you want and save some dollars for future projects.
I choose the SC since in reviews they indicated it would work better for B&W shots and was the main reason for choosing SC vs. MC. Sample photos from both lenses look great to me.
Good luck with your decision and post some shots when you get the combo.
B&W is my love, and yes, because of that statement by vendors and reviewers I was initialy inclining toward SC but after looking around MC seemed to result in contrast that is closer to my personal preference.

Yes, before picking up the 40/1.4 I did take a look at the 35/1.4 and attempted to purchase one but did not pull the trigger on time.

The 40/1.4 that I purchased on Ebay came with the hood. It was described as in Mint Condition and it was. It was a very nice saving from paying full price for a new copy of a lens with hood. I could have easily owned the 35 under different circumstances. I did enough reading on both that I was confident with either one if I got it for the right price. If you want a 35mm I don't think you can go wrong.

What draws me toward 35/1.4 is that samples I saw _appear_ punchier/sharper @ 1.4 than ones from 40/1.4 even though I have seen comments that 40 is sharper.
That and because I feel effective focal length of 70mm would be more often usable for street/indoors than one of 80mm.
On other hand I see 35 has noticable distortion, I don't know is same the case with 40.
Any info/input/thoughts?

With that said, I also like the three 35mm lens that I have and believe all of them could produce great shots.

The photos are in random order.
My opinion/thought would be do not over think it. The lens is just a tool and the photographer will have a lot of control over the output. It is not just about the equipment. In the end I do believe you will be happy with either. If you like the 35mm focal length over the 40mm then it is an easy decision. If you want the lens that will save you money and still have great output then it is an easy decision, it is the 40mm. . . . . . . and if you want to have the fastest 35mm then the decision is easy, go for the 35/1.2, just start saving the bucks!
. . . . . or just save up and buy both the 35/1.4 and 40/1.4 since it is not much more then the 35/1.2 and then sell off the least favorite after extensive testing . . . . . it could take years :ROTFL:I feel exactly same, thank you for reminding me. 35/1.4 MC it will be.

FYI - not sure of the date of manufacturer for the first 2 lenses, the Zeiss CY line was discontinued in 2005 and the Voigtlander released the 40/1.4 in 2004

4. Leica Summicron - M 35mm f2 Aspherical (2001)
. . . . . the 35mm f3.5 is a very nice lens and can be found for around $300.00 in Mint condition, about the same price of a mint 40/1.4 . . . . .
. . . . . now go get that 35/1.4 and have some fun!
