I think dpr misread the information. It's the firmware update with enhanced functionality (camera/lens interface) that won't be available for the older cameras. Panasonic has previously stated that the lenses will work on all m4/3 cameras, and it's difficult to understand how they wouldn't, since the power zoom is activated by a physical switch on the lens. Th 45-175mm also has a traditional zoom and manual focus option.
But I might be wrong of course
I don't care what gear I have.

Read it again. Power zoom works ON ALL CAMERAS, PANASONIC AND OLYMPUS.
What the firmware enables is the four listed "bonus" features (step zoom, focal length display, zoom resume, selectable zoom speed).
In fact, Andy W. has already posted he tested the lenses on a GF-1 and an Olympus camera and they work perfectly.
EDIT: PS, there was plenty of confusion with the first announcements of the lenses as the press releases made it sound like there might be issues with older cameras. DPR checked with Panasonic for clarification and was told they work fine with all cameras and DPR tested and confirmed this. This press release is just saying what features the new firmwares would add above the functionality on all the other cameras.
