There is no single factor - they just got a lot right. The IBIS is a big deal. I have been a Pentax fan for years, in part due to them having in-body stabilization. There are some great lenses available that work perfectly without any drama (45/1.8, 25/1.4, etc). The EVF is good, the angled screen is useful, the iq is good (especially at higher iso), and it performs well in all conditions (wet, low light, etc). The AF performance is snappy and the black/silver body (especially with a silver 45/1.8) evokes another time.
