Both my Nikon cameras were in for repair, so I decided to go all Panasonic for the races this weekend, the GH1 as my main camera and L1 for backup and whenever I needed the 14-50mm. The results are so good that I can't really see why I need to carry that big heavy D300 and large lenses around the track anymore. GH2 next

    GH1 with Sigma 50mm f/1.4 @ f/8 and 1/250s

First thing I did in the shop was turn the focus ring, so used I am with MF lenses. But this is a real joy; a fast autofocus portrait lens.
The possible image quality is outstanding, I think.

And for a reasonable price although because of that no MF possibilitys like the Zuiko 12mm has.
Have to go out and use it more soon!

    @ Glenn; wonderfull image!

Thanks, Rich. I recently bought the Sigma 50 in 4/3 mount, and find it to be an extremely versatile lens on m4/3. It's too large and heavy of course, and won't AF on my GH1 (it will on the GH2 though), but everything else about it is just good. Since it's a native 4/3 lens, it brings up enlarged view by itself when I focus manually, and all camera controls work like with any m4/3 lens.

    Jorgen,

Glad to hear the 4/3 mount Sigma 50mm f1.4 is working out so well for you! It is an overlooked lens and too bad it went out of production in that mount. Looking forward to your shots with the Leica D Vario-Elmarit 14-50 as well.

    Cheers,

    Justin (aka neelyfallon)

Great stuff guys! Amazing shots... Tess - wonderful result!!

What is this humble image then using a 1900 invented symmetrical design with just two simple thin meniscus lenses with lots of aberrations... guess the lens?

Thanks Don, for me, these personal captures make shooting with the system worthwhile. The resolution charts and noise comparisons pale to insignificance when you have first rate lenses attached and have the subject.

I'm really loving your portrait work Don, learning so much here so please keep 'em coming.

    Kind regards

The L1 is a great camera to use. It's a bit big and bulky, and the lens even more so, but at low ISO, it delivers some lovely results.

Fun event yesterday, the Helmets for Kids Charity. People paid to be driven three laps around the track in a sports or race car and the proceedings will be used to buy crash helmets for children riding motorbikes to school. I hope it works as intended, but at least it was great fun for all involved.

Here's one of the photos where the GH1/7-14 combo really shows its strength:
I held the camera in through the side window with my right hand, looking at the LCD through the windshield. This is taken inside a Lotus Elise, and anyone who has seen one knows that it's as cramped as can be. It looks as if it will fit inside the trunk of most other sports cars

    Beautiful composition, Klaus

Micek, I like all the three above, particularly the last one (and that is not only because the woman is beautiful)

Re: Fun with 4/3rds cameras/ Image Thread

While people are fighting for their homes and livelihoods in northern Bangkok, against the flood that slowly advances through this huge city and its surroundings, in Pak Nam, just south of Bangkok, on both sides of the same raging Chao Praya river, the annual Pra Samuth Chedi temple fair is happening. Countless concerts, food stalls, shows, lotteries... the lots. For the river is still a few centimeters short of flooding Pak Nam and surroundings, and if you can see no flood, there is no flood.

And just when you thought you had seen it all, the food, the tens of thousands of people, the ferris wheels, the latest fashions in pink shorts with green and orange flowers and the bikers risking their lives driving inside a giant barrel, the most sensational exhibits appear before your eyes: A real mermaid, a child with two heads, three hands and three legs and other human peculiarities. If you hadn't seen it with your own eyes, you simply wouldn't believe that such things existed, and they're all yours to see for a mere 10 Baht.
