Re: Fun with 4/3rds cameras/ Image Thread

I've been lurking for about a year, well posting a little. I've been kind of afraid to post anything being a complete amateur, but with the 4/3s forum back I thought it would be a good time to contribute something and hopefully get me motivated again. These are some pictures from the E-510 my brother brought me when he visited. I had the camera for a week at this point. All with the kit lenses and various PP in Aperture. Still not really sure what I'm doing, so these might be a bit over done.

Re: Fun with 4/3rds cameras/ Image Thread

No matter what experience level you are we all where a at one time new to photography. What counts is it get's you motivated to go out shoot and learn. In the process of that you have fun and bottom line that is what photography should be is something you enjoy and have fun with. Your post should be a wake up call to many people, never be afraid to post and have fun here. This is a site designed to learn and share and as co-owner of this site, It will always be that kind of place. I hope your posts inspires the folks that read and that do not post to get involved more. Like they say there is never a dumb question. Well there is never a bad image that you can't learn from. Okay that got my engine roaring this morning and only 2 espresso's . Hmmm maybe i need three.

Re: Fun with 4/3rds cameras/ Image Thread

cjlazc

as everybody has said .. dont be afraid to post photos here... people here are kind and helpful

Like kweide i took my fav picture of yours and spent a couple minutes doing an alternative version ... the way I would have worked that picture

basically i cropped to have a more 'rule of thirds' look... then i added a vignette... this almost always makes a picture look that little more special... well it does to me :-)

have fun... listen to everyone and then do what you think looks right.

There are no right and wrong answers

Thanks for the kind comments! Nice job removing the ropes and bottle. Unfortunately I don't have Photoshop, nor do I know how to use it. The little bit of 'punch' you added does change the feel. I'm not sure which I like better, but I'll have to play around with it some.

I like the crop. I have a bad tendency to put everything in the middle of the image.

Thanks for the feedback and encouragement.

Re: Fun with 4/3rds cameras/ Image Thread

If you like,

there are a lot of free tools in the market worth a look i.e.:

The Gimp
http://www.gimp.org/

Irfanview
http://www.irfanview.net/

Faststone
http://www.faststone.org/

In most cases Photoshop Elements is realy enough for doing some editing and retouching and it costs only a little. Have a look to the Adobe Website.

There are a lot of 30 days trial versions.
http://www.adobe.com/downloads/

So just try, your photos are worth it !!

You can see that everyone has different ideas as to how a photo should look, there is no right and wrong, just what looks right for you.The beauty of digital is that its cheap, get yourself elements or similar, put an image in and keep going until it looks good to you, thats it,its free, enjoy yourself, all the best,Neil.

May want to look into getting Photoshop elements to get started , not very expensive but still has a lot of tools. Even Iphoto with a Mac is not bad

cjlacz,

The GIMP is a free software and it doesn't give much to Photoshop really. Few years back the interface wasn't very intuitive to say the least, today it is a very different beast worth a try.

Re: Fun with 4/3rds cameras/ Image Thread

Thanks; I'll try that:

Post-attempt edit:

It appeared to have uploaded the file, and said it had. But then I clicked "submit reply" (should I have done something else first?), and the image isn't here. I tried from one of my local drives; should I try instead from the web - does that work correctly? Well, I guess I'll just go ahead and try that now, then I'll know:

Post-post-attempt edit:

That obviously didn't work either... anyone care to educate me?

It must be that I didn't use the . I'll try now using that:

Eureka! Thanks!

Not very pleasing bokeh, is it? That was wide open (f3.5) at 54mm.

Re: Fun with 4/3rds cameras/ Image Thread

Thanks for the software suggestions. I'm on a Mac so some of them I can't use, although I remember Infranview from way way back. Gimp looks like it has been improved a bit, although still X11 based. I'll try downloading the demo of Photoshop Elements when I have time to play with it.

Maybe I should mention what I have now. I moved up from iPhoto to Aperture earlier this year. I'm still learning it's features but I'm pretty happy with it. I really like how good the highlight recovery is. I wish it had non-destructible local modifications like LR2.

Mitch's B&W work was what inspired me to get the GRD2 and I also picked up Lightzone. I've ignored Lightzone for quite a while and just started playing with it again last night. I see a lot of the advantages more clearly then I did before. I haven't been happy with what I've tried doing in B&W so I'll starting playing with Lightzone again.

I do have a few questions. Can I do things like removing the rope and bottle with this software? I haven't looked into how to do this. I assume Gimp can if/when I learn it. What useful tools would Photoshop Elements add on top of these two? I remember someone here was testing some new software that sounded like it would be a better Lightzone. Does anyone know what came of that?

Thanks again for all the great suggestions!

A few more ice-abstracts.
I'm really impressed with how well the G1 handles these kind of motives, even with just the kit lens.
