I'm enjoying the Pen and here are a few random thoughts:

* I prefer a wrist strap to the neck strap and have taken one off a GRDII.
* I normally hate Fun with Filters but I love the pinhole look and shoot it in camera using RAW + JPEG superfine.
* I have the white version with kit zoom and have never had so many people stop me and ask what camera I am holding. Not even with an M8.
* The Panny 45-200 is an amazingly good lens on this camera and for some reason I never really liked it on the G1.
* I shoot at ISO 200 as much as I can (base ISO, best DR)
* The metering is so good that you get to really use every F stop of dynamic range. There are other cameras with wider DR which end up with narrower DR because their metering is less good.
* After hours of early experiments with and without tripods, IS etc, I now leave IS on most of the time. I think that at speeds of around 50th to 200th it might sometimes introduce a small blur and if the shot is vital I turn IS off but below 1/50th it helps and above 1/200th it doesn't harm. But I do believe that the majority of soft shots on the camera are caused by shake, not poor focus.
* The implementation of MF for manual lenses needs a revision in firmware: it is really annoying!
* The implementation of My Mode on the Fn button needs a revision in firmware: it is really annoying!
* I'm keeping RAW copies of everything for later but for now the JPEGs are great!
* I now rarely use my M glass: there are too many issues with soft corners on lenses shorter than 50mm. But for a certain look I will sometimes use lenses of 50mm and longer but never against the light, where CA can become a real issue.
* I have a 5DII with me and have been using the Pen much more often. My sense is that for prints to about 20 x 14 inches you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference at ISO 200 (depending on lens) and that for some subjects I might even print to 20 x 30"
* Notwithstanding the above, there is sometimes a 'small sensor' look to the files and until I can play with them in a RAW processor I know, and look at some prints, I won't be able fully to work out when, why or indeed if this is really true.

I'm loving it. It is really rather cool!

Best

HI Tim
Lovely shots - especially that first one.
I took my wrist strap off a GX-100 :)

Otherwise I think I agree with you - except that I have been preferring the RAW files - using Capture One for conversion. As far as the 'small sensor' look, don't you think it's more to do with the increased depth of field than anything particular about the IQ?

I have the silver one . . . and I'm beginning to wish I'd got the white too!

Jono, why on earth would you want that girly white camera?

I have the white body, and think it's really sharp looking. I had to laugh when I read a post elsewhere including the observation that the white body is "girly". Is it? Is that bad? Anyway, I will not trade my white body for your silver one!

But this is all off topic. Despite limited time to use the camera so far, my opinion is quite positive. Small size and great images. Thanks for your album and comments, Tim.

I like some of those art effects but they they take forever to write...otherwise I think might have tested them some more.
P.S - The Soft focus one looks like a bad porno from the 70's

Great shots Tim, and I agree with your "thoughts" as well. My favorite lens on the E-P1 is still the 50 lux, but I'm enjoying the 7-14, and 45-200 more and more as well.

I love your images, Tim. You vignette a lot, is that in-camera, or post processing?

Keith
I was guessing its the pinhole art filter that he likes. Agree that I like the photos very much also.

People keep listing the pros and I might have to reconsider LOL. I haven't seen the white in person--only the silver/black but its growing on me--and I'm a 'black camera' person.

Haha!
When I said at the beginning I was interested in the white you guys laughed me!!!!! I caved to peer pressure (and a desire to have it right away).

Tim,
I agree with your two requests! Will look at your shots when on a bigger screen. I think you would have fun with the 7-14.

Diane - it makes a perfect companion (I don't want to use the term "back-up", because I don't know which one I will use most) to the G1.

With the 17mm it is pocketable and convenient (and the OVF is nice). The in-body anti-shake makes me happy, because I've used the Pentax K10.

In a few weeks I go to Europe, and I'll take the G1, E-P1 and my favorite lenses.

I'm still very interested in what Panny will do - this format shows the most threat to the Leica footprint, and I'm sure things will only get better.

Thanks everyone!

For everyone who hasn't yet bought theirs, do as Tom suggests and get the white one! Pimp your life! It feels so wrong and looks so... odd but cool. I love it viscerally!

@Jono, the small sensor feel is I think something to do with the DOF and also with the laid back approach to black clipping so that more noise is visible in the shadows than usual but also more information. I think!

When I get home I'll experiment with C1 hacked as you suggest.

@ Rafa, is there such a thing as a bad 70's porn film?! ;-)

@ Keith, I shoot RAW plus JPEG so I can afford to use the in-camera Pinhole 'Art' filter and have a real fie to revert to if it goes wrong. The effects are so cheesy they're cool! You can trick up something similar in Lightroom if you boost vibrance, reduce saturation and add vignette.

@ Diane, even a 'black collar worker' would be seduced by the white... go on, try it...

@ Terry, you have been a leading light in persuading me into this one. I've trusted you for years so I bought the white one blindly on your advice... and now I get mistaken for Bruno...

@ Keith, I sold my G1 before getting the Pen and though the G1 has certain small advantages I really wouldn't travel with both: the Pen is easily enough and much more fun to use... take some extra glass instead?

Another fun with filters shot from the free bar in my hotel... thank God for Image Stabilization...

The Italy images are terrific, Congratulations! I haven't taken the D90 out of the house since receiving the pen. In my case, it has redefined the equipment necessary to make wonderful images.

Some nice pictures. But what did happen with the blue sky in pic 11? Is this a fault of the camera?

Jono is not telling the truth - which is really not like him! Picture number 11 is a reflection of the hotel in the swimming pool, inverted!
