Using Studio 2 v2.3
- Exif TIFF is 8bit TIFF with camera generated EXIF data embedded in the TIFF file.
- TIFF allows you to create 16 or 8 bit TIFF files, the EXIF data is a reduced set vs the output from the camera.
In all three cases, the TIFF files are uncompressed. Opening them in Photoshop CS2 and then using the
File->Save As... command, and adding Zip compression, reduces their size quite a lot.
I took one .ORF from the E-P1 and output it in Exif-TIFF, TIFF 16 and TIFF 8 formats. Then brought it into Photoshop CS2 and did the
Save As... to zip compressed TIFF and PSD formats. Here's what I found:
size/bytes filename
73172112 P6300004-16bit.tif :: original
69954232 P6300004-16bitPS.tif :: tiff-zip
73183928 P6300004-16bit.psd :: Photoshop
36586560 P6300004-8bit.tif :: original
15197844 P6300004-8bitPS.tif :: tiff-zip
35733812 P6300004-8bit.psd :: Photoshop
36672864 P6300004-ExifTIFF.tif :: original
15200452 P6300004-ExifTIFFPS.tif :: tiff-zip
35736366 P6300004-ExifTIFF.psd :: Photoshop
You can see the file size savings in zip compressed TIFF are quite good for 8bit files, not so much for 16bit files. Adding layers, etc, might prove more compact in PSD format vs TIFF format ... hard to say until you look at specific examples.
