    Helen,
I really like the tonality in your shots specially when you apply your personal rodinal mix! it gives them en edge with strong blacks.

A color pic of mine ( m4-2/35mm/ kodak slide film)

Thank you Helen. I will print a couple to see how they look on paper, but regardless, it was a great experience. I'm anxious to go out and shoot some more just to develop again

    D76 it was.

    Helen,

I used to shoot a lot of slide film such as fuji provia and kodachrome. Nowdays I mostly use C41 films like kodak portra 160/400 vc or the fuji 160s / 400h as prefer the colors compared to the more contrasty slide films. Will you be scanning the film?

Back to the good ol' Tri-X with m4-2 and 35mm...

William, I like this picture. Does tri-x scan like this, or did you do some tweaking post?

    @wjlapier:
    Hi,
I always scan my bw very flat in order to keep as much info as possible. I then do the same work in PS as I would do in the darkroom i.e. grading, dodging, burning, etc. I use vuescan as my scanning soft and though it's bit complicated it gives me the flat neg I want. Hope this helps.
    Cheers

That does help. I use Vuescan too and scanned mine as neutral as possible. I then did my post in PS, but I need to know more about some of those terms you used for darkroom work. I'll dig for it on the net.

    Thanx alot.

Nice shot Helen, theres a strong relationship between the two foreground figures.Well done on the analogue decision,it will pay off in leaps and bounds as you go on.Good idea to have a small digital carry around just to take notes. All the best,.......Neil.

That's what the shoulder and toe of B&W film is all about... The only digital camera I own which seems to have a "workable" toe and shoulder is a Sigma DP1... It's not film like, but it's closer than others I have tried or use.

Its those blown highlights that just finnish digital as a serious medium for me.Ive put in a few posts to see if anyone has an opinion on a black and white sensor such as was available from kodak and is still available as a mf back, would this overcome the problem?

Great skin tones. Did you have to do a lot of post processing to get the colors right or was this basically "out of the camera."

    Hi Woody,

These are almost straigt out of camera/scanner. I used silverfast to scan the neg and then only did a resize/ small curve adjustment plus slight sharpen for web. I'm quite surprised because I have read that the new ektar is not too good for people shots. Anyway I like it.

    Cheers,

    LLoyd,

there seem to be potential but the drugstore scan has completely destroyed the pic. On my screen it looks heavily oversharpened and they also seem to have applied some noise reduction(???). Make sure to scan it yourself as I'm sure the neg looks fine.

    Cheers,
Thank you for your comments, William. Most appreciated.

I am anxious to see what my own scan will reveal. Don't know how they scan, but I just picked up the film, and was anxious to post something here.

The oversharpening may be my doing, I reduced this for web viewing and then applied a "sharpen for web" action I use for M8 files. Together with the sharpening the forum applies, it does look like too much.

Here's another file from this roll. Also the drugstore scan.

Ok, here's another attempt. Same image as above, but scanned in my Nikon Super CoolScan 4000. Don't know how the scratches got on the negative; pretty disappointing. (no sharpening this time.)

Hi Lloyd. I'm glad that you posted the two pics. I've been wondering what the lab would do to my negs if I let them scan them--after I scan them of course! But mainly to see what my pics would look like if I didn't do my digital darkroom.

I'd be curious to know more about your scanning and post processing. I use a Coolscan V and Vuescan and am learning something different just about everyday.

Leif, that is a great shot!

Actually, I'm pretty new at this. I've used a flatbed scanner with some good results, but bought this 4000 mainly to digitize old slides. Just tried it out his morning... default settings, and then a little contrast curve in PS to brighten the image a bit. That's it... looking to learn more myself.

Oh yeah, I like this one even better. The water in closer, and the blacks and tones there really jump. Good stuff.
