Jane Bown who died on Sunday was one of the worlds top portrait photographers. Although many people here will not be aware of her name they will have seen some of her iconic work which became historic documentation of the second half of the 20th century.

Revered Observer photographer Jane Bown dies aged 89 | Art and design | The Guardian

The reason why I am posting here is because of Jane's superb B/W technique using very simple equipment.....just Olympus OM1 and 85mm set to f2.8....focused on one of the sitters eyes. She disliked 'gear' and tried to only use available light,..although she sometimes carried a desk lamp in a plastic carrier bag.

Much (most) of her work will repay careful examination if you like to make good images yourself. Having read her interesting obitury, make sure to click on 'Her life in photograhs' to see some of the several thousand portraits she shot for The Observer over 65 years.
