JLM: Nice collection! I love those big sun visor thingies. They manage to look sinister somehow. Cool.

    Re: Planes, Trains and Automobiles

Love those old cars and customs!

Here's a Borax wagon "train" from Death Valley.....I'm pushing the definition of "trains" here (just a bit!), but we need more planes and trains in this thread.

I took this photo years ago with the Canon G2 and only have a small jpg here.

This one is from my archives. The original is 4x5 film, Astia IIRC:

From an even earlier trip to the same spot, the original is MF film, Velvia:

And finally, a more recent capture (Canon DSLR):

Here are a couple: a Bonneville racer driven by Jerry Kugel's daughter-in-law, who's trying to break 200 mph in August, and my milder version at the Santa Monica Airport.

Jack, those are wonderful shots. Large and medium format really shines.

Lots of nice steel here. Hard to stop.

Lots of great machines and photos!

Here's another of the Alaska RR engine 1802. Hasselblad 501CM, can't remember if it was with the 50mm or 80mm lens, Provia 100, Epson V750 scan.

Despite the decay, there is a sublime sense of peace in this image. Even the old rusted auto seems to be still well taken care of as if the owner had simply removed the tires and wheels out of concern for the safety of the beloved machine and is about to return any day now with the new replacements and then, together, car and driver will lovingly continue on their journey.

This workshop would have been great except that we were on the road the whole time. Otherwise the weather is alway a consideration in getting there and back.

Have I heard that before ?? Noooo...

Sofitel used to be the Railway Hotel. When I stayed there the first time, in 1977, the price for a room was 330 Baht in the old building and 360 in the new. I believe it's slightly more expensive now

    Re: Planes, Trains and Automobiles

This 1957 Pontoon body Testa Rosa was purchased by the present owner in the early '60's as a "has been" racer for, IIRC, a few thousand $$. He restored it and has raced it since then. This was taken several years ago, after it had to retire from a race with a "blown" differential. A similar car sold as auction recently for $12 million.
