Best time of year for Big Sur, CA?

As a birthday gift I'm being taken to Big Sur, around the time of my choice. What/when is the best time of year to go?

Clearly I'm hoping for some good photography; but also some good weather.
Thanks!

I haven't been myself, but am planning to soon. A friend of mine who's been there suggested waiting for a weekend when it's unlikely to be foggy or rainy (which means keeping an eye on weather forecasts).

I've also heard that the roads, lodgings, restaurants, etc. can get crowded in the peak summer season, so it's best to avoid that too.

i always find low tides to be most interesting

will give you an idea of when there are tides (minus tides seem to be the best for me)

I try to time my trips to the coast for a minus tide occuring just before sunrise, or just before sunset. This gives great light as well as more exposed rocks. There are some places (Garrapata as an example) where you can't get to the beach during high tides.

Thanks for the tide info! I'll be there for the full weekend (possibly extended?), so I should have several opportunities - weather permitting.

Here-in lies my problem. "waiting for a weekend when it's unlikely to be foggy or rainy (which means keeping an eye on weather forecasts)." would be great except I'm being put up at a swanky hotel; and that limits how last minute I can go (to pretty much a few months out!)

I'm thinking April showers bring May flowers and aim for very early May. Thoughts?

Sounds as good as any to me. Probably better than summer, with its frequent coastal fogs.

Of course, don't listen to me, I've never been there. I've only seen the weather patterns further north up the coast, but it's probably strongly correlated...

April and May are high season in the Philippines. I was in Dauin outside Dumaguete City this year for May and it was spectacular for Macro. Anilao and Tubbataha should also be great that time of year.

fall is good. early spring can be bad news. summer is foggy. but there are exceptions to this. call your hotel and ask them directly. i used to have a place in carmel (got bored going there so sold it) and that was the best time there. i shoot the at&t every year and half the time it really sucks (feb).
