WTB: LEICA "M" Lenses... ;)

Hey guys,

no I don't have a LEICA M rangefinder camera... At list not yet, and don't think I'm going to get one either, since I'm headed to the MF... ;)
But Hell, in the good spirit of this Forum in spending money like there is no Banks to put it in, if I'm offered a good deal on a PRISTINE Black Leica M9-P, I'll go for it... ;)

However I do have the RED EPIC which is getting outfitted with a new LEICA M adaptor made from RED... ;)

For this I'm looking to buy some "M" glass in good conditions... ;)

LOOKING FOR:

Leica - 21mm f/1.4 Summilux-M Aspherical Lens
Leica - 35mm f/1.4 Summilux-M Aspherical Lens
Leica - 50mm f/1.4 Summilux M Aspherical Lens
Leica - 90mm f/2.0 APO Summicron M Aspherical Lens
Leica - 135mm f/3.4 APO Telyt M Lens

PS: All lenses must be "BLACK"

If any one here, knows some very specific reason thru proven tests and experience, that I have chosen a lens for which an other would have been better, please do share your opinion, I'll listen.. ;)

If you have a lens to sale You can send me pictures and details with price via email: [email protected]

THANKS!!

Ketch, as someone who worked in the film industry for quite a while, have you done any analysis of the most commonly used focal lengths for the work you are considering? My suggestions (based on years of work in the 16mm end of film) are that the 28, 50, and 75 or 90mm EFOV focal lengths will do the vast majority of your work. What size is the RED EPIC sensor?

I mention this because an issue of American Cinematographer did do this analysis some time ago (could be years) and moving the camera and using focal lengths near 'normal' lengths was surprisingly common. Just a thought, and might save you a LOT of money!

Hi Kit,

most consider me a very unique Director/Cinematographer, as I really don't follow any of the rules of Photography in FILM, also I don't only use my EPIC cameras for Cinema, but also for Fashion shoots and generally most applications in which I would use a 35mm Still camera, then I go ahed and extract frame grabs and work them as they were Stills.

The RED EPIC sensor is a 1.3 ratio, just like the 1D series cameras form Canon, and it is also a CMOS sensor with 13.8MP resolution in RAW RED CODEC, called R3D, and it shoots in RAW, so when extracting form the filmed footage, all frame grabs have a resolution of 13.8MP.

So this lenses I look for are not just for Cinema application but also for Photography, for which I'm currently using the Canon L series glass, and of course the Cinema Glass, previously had the Master Primes, which I sold, in favor of the new LEICA SUMMILUX CINE PRIMES, arriving shortly, and of course the RED Cinema glass.

Ketch; I get it; ignore my comments—I was assuming that you were primarily interested in high-def video. Now your lens choices look very different.

Please post on how you find the EPIC as a still camera; I'm definitely interested.

He he, no problem at all Kit.

The Epic as a stil camera is an entirely different Machine, with his Pro's and Con's especially for those coming fomr 35mm Still Photography.

HOwever, I have very few Cons, and tones of Pros, as I adjust and take advantage of each tool, to fit my needs, I'll be shortly doing an in depth review of the RED EPIC, after nearly a year of intense daily use around the Globe, in a multitude of projects, from Major Cinema, to Fashion Shoots, City Scape portraits, and Landscape shooting.

When done, I'll start a new thread with the permission of the big boys here to possibly have this new DSMC (Digital Still Motion Camera) Section, for the RED EPIC and RED SCARLET... ;)

But been able to shoot 13.8MP at 96 Frame per Second, and then slightly lower res to 120 Frame per Second, and then lowering the rez, get up to 300 Frame per Second, well that does something to catching the moment,in some type of photography... ;)

I wil really appreciate your review of the RED EPIC, Ketch. And I totally get what it's like to shoot at those frame rates—but deciding between images must be Hell!

Yes Kit,

it brings an entire new set of challenges, however for me wince Im used to it in shooting Action scenes, crashes and any sopecialised scene in any given movie, I have come to appreciate the Computing power needed as well as the need to take that much more time, you can't afford to always shoot at those speeds just because you can, or it will be really a hell in Post production... ;)

Exactly: at 96 fps, adjacent images are just do close—selecting becomes the problem.

and I have the fastest Apple laptop for just that reason! cheers, KL

Yes, that is why I always stress to only use the highest frame rates only when absolutely needed, unless of course they love filling up those Terabyte Hard drives really fast, and always have tone of hours to trow away during Post Production ... ;)

I think Noctilux f1 will be perfect for RED because the size, weight and focus ring is so good... do you want one? I have last version with build in hood.

I was thinking about the Noctilux, but tests have shown the 1.4 Lux to be sharper.

But if, and a big if, I was to get it, would be the : Leica 50mm f/0.95 Noctilux-M Aspherical Lens.

Ketch, I would have thought jim and company would have made up a "R" mount first for the epic/scarlet.. do you know if that is in the works?..there has been lots of interest in doing cine mods on the r lens for both red and other cameras...btw how did you manage to get a 35mm summilux-c ? I thought those were strickly being distributed as sets?? also there was just posted a grey steel m9 here in nyc on this forum. good luck..you create envy whenever you post!!

Hey Paul,

no Leica "R" mount on the works form RED, at one point I started talking to them about making the "S" even so the difference form FM to 35mm 1.3 sensor, but I just love that glass so much, that I might end up buying the Leica S instead of a larger MP count MF system, just because of those insane lenses... ;)

I have found few 21mm, and 35mm, also one 50mm, a 75mm, and two 90mm, no 135mm yet.

But I am also looking for a fair price, with no one trying to take advantage, as I'm not willing to over pay for any lens, with the excuse that they aren't many out or there is a backorder, I have gotten so many PM's and emails, that shows there is plenty available for sale in the use market, also I need Pristine Copies.

As far as the M9, I also only want a Black one, I can't have any silver ones, as on set I'll not be able to use them on the account of possible reflections, same for the lenses.

If you want to be all stealthy..I hope you plan on either having a few cans of K-line matte black dulling spray for that bright-n-shiny M mount.. or make sure your m lenses and mount are hidden behind a big *** matte box.. I never understand why a modern camera would have anything but black.. some just can't resist a bit of bling I suppose. It looks like a very stout and well made mount though!

Yeah, I know, I also have told them the same, about the PL Titanium mount, but unfortunately Titanium is so hard to Anodize... :(

Either way, in Motion Picture productions you always use Matte Box, and were that fails, there is always good old Gaffer's Tape... ;)

But in all honesty, as far as the "M" Leica glass is concern, and any Still glass I would use with Epic, it will not be for Motion Picture but for Frame Grab extractions, and or Fashion Shoots Shorts, for Motion Picture I have the LEICA SUMMILUX CINE PRIMES coming... ;)
