Leica MP-3 Black Paint Limited Edition Set
In 1956 the first Leica MP 'Professional' cameras were issued at the request of photojournalists who required a rapid film advance and preferred a simpler camera without the M3's self-timer and automatic resetting windowed film counter. Later a very limited number of MP-2s were issued which was basically an M2 style body with hardened steel gears which coupled via bottom of the shutter housing 'gear-pin' style (like the later M6/MP) to a 3 frames per second 'Wetzlar Motor-Drive'.
To celebrate these legendary cameras and their 50th anniversary introduction, Leica and the Leica Historical Society of America issued a Limited Edition camera - the Leica MP-3.
1000 cameras total were made, 500 each in Black Paint and 500 in Chrome, with only 125 of these in each finish being issued as a complete set: MP-3 camera, matching Leicavit, 'retro' style 50mm Summilux ASPH, all in a beautiful black silk lined red Presentation Box. This is one of those much desired and very rare125 complete Black Paint MP-3 Sets.
The LHSA Special Edition MP-3 camera body combines the classic look of the earlier MP with the modern made precision of the latest Leica MP. The top plate is of the M3 style with raised viewfinder windows, traditional top plate 'Leica' script engravings, 'buddha style' 50s strap lugs (from the original M3/MP), and the M2 manual setting film counter. The viewfinder is .72 magnification uncluttered - frames are viewed individually one at a time - with 3 frames for 35/50/90, and frames themselves are of the old style traditional larger viewed area within the frame that is more accurate 'see what you get', 1 meter adjustment. The latest MP built-in meter has been incorporated in the camera. I believe it to be the most beautiful and functional Special Edition camera ever released - especially in the tradition Black Lacquer Paint as in this example.
The Leicavit, as with the first 1950s MP is an essential part of the package. Rapid advance of the film and shutter was one of the main feature points of the original MP camera's function. This new MP-3 has a beautiful Leicavit with the traditional 'Leicavit' script engraved on the front. On the back engraving 'Leica Camera AG', 'Solms', 'Germany', and inside (out of sight with the Leicavit mounted on the camera) the 'LHSA' logo and 'Special Edition'.
The MP-3 set also comes with a very special lens - the 'retro' designed 50mm Summilux ASPH Lens with tradition metal round style hood - the 'look' of the earliest 50mm Summilux. This is a Gorgeous Lens, solid brass lens mount with scalloped grooved focus ring and machined 'diamond' grip mounting ring and in the same Black Lacquer of the other items in the set. The 'LHSA' logo is engraved on the bottom of the mounting ring along with 'Lens made in Germany'. This lens has been up-dated with a modern designed internal precision made mount using a 2-pin design to guide the inner/outer mount (helix) and tolerance of the mechanical movement made to a very high degree. The optical unit is of the newest ASPH design with special optical glasses and floating elements which make it the 'best' 50mm lenses ever.
I've taken the items out and checked them, mounted the lens, advanced and fired the shutter. All are in 'mint' condition. I see no blemishes or marks on any of the items, never a roll of film through them, never a strap attached. All smooth and precise in function.
Included are: Special Edition Black Painted MP-3 Camera Body, Black Painted Leicavit, Black Painted 'retro' Summilux 1.4/50mm ASPH Lens, Black Painted front cap and plastic rear cap with metal hood and hood cap, Leica UV Filter, Documentation, outer Silver Box, and inner black silk lined Red Presentation Box. Not included is the camera strap which has gone missing, and a couple pieces of the documentation (white guarantee cards… maybe something else ?)- sorry.
