I went to Phoenix today with the intent of buying one but the whole town is sold out of all 3G models. That includes about five Apple Stores and at least the two Best Buys I visited.
Apple have been doing some supply rationing with the 3G deliveries. I picked up my 3G at my local Apple specialist store and they were pretty unhappy with the way that stock had been allocated. They were told on Monday that they were going to be receiving their first delivery of 100 64GB 3G iPads. By Wednesday that had dropped to FIVE. After some frantic negotiation they finally got an exception and their quota increased to 15 which were available Friday, although they couldn't officially sell them until 5pm. They had a fun time on the phone letting people down all day Friday.

I'm sure that the Apple stores did better but demand definitely outstripped supply for retail product on Friday & Saturday.

A friend of mine is thinking of buying something for his 99 year old dad to use for reading. I read that in addition to being able to increase the font size, you can reverse the text on an iPad, providing white text on a black background. Has anyone tried this? Any feedback on it would be appreciated.
Stephen,

I am using white on black with the Kindle reader on iPhone...very legible and
limits the reflection from the screen interfering with legibility. Quite usable and
I prefer it for reading in bed as screen size limits the need for bobbing in order to keep focal plane of progressive lenses in the sharp zone.

So iPad black on white should be as good...now if they let us pick forground background I would prefer dark grey or blue to black....less contrast but that might increase readibility for those with vision issues.

Users are reporting that Skype and Line2 do not work on the iPad 3G in 3G only mode.

Another data option if you have an iPhone:

jailbreak it with the new Spirit jailbreak. Very easy I did mine today with no problems, it's a one button press operation completely automatic.

Get an app called PDAnet through Cydia and install it. You'll have to pay 29 bucks for it but it makes your iPhone into a WIFI router.

And there you go no 3G iPad required.

No, just don't update to later versions of the OS unless it's worth losing the jailbreak (until they jailbreak that.) ;)

No it works fine. Cydia is the app service for the non Apple apps. I think Cydia gets installed with the jailbreak. If not go here for Cydia http://cydia.hackulo.us/

There are a lot of apps there (on Cydia) including a multi tasking app and various themes. If you do it just back up your phone first you can restore it if theres any problem but I didn't have to. I have a 3G not a 3GS if that matters I don't know. I'm using Line2 VoIP for phone; no longer have an ATT contract.

I've got a WinterBoard theme running makes it look just like the upcoming iPhone 4.0 plus the Backgrounder app for multitasking. I spent most of the day figuring this out. There's even an app called Cycorder to record video with the camera.

I'll upgrade to the iPhone 4.0 software and maybe get the new iPhone when it comes out then jailbreak that.

The jailbreak is here http://www.spiritjb.com/ Read the comments before proceeding especially if you are using Windoze

You can also get BossPrefs from Cydia to control what icons are displayed. I removed a few like SMS and iPhone calling as I'm not using them.

I checked the Verizon site about theirs and old Engadget (and other) articles and its a 2200 and hasn't been recalled. It looks a bit different but from what I can read, made by Novatel also but different model made for Verizon.

Jailbreak + MyWi = iPhone wifi hotspot. Works great but not for long periods without an iPhone charger.

Sounds about right - I get about 5 hours out of my N900 when used as a 3G/Wifi hotspot. Seems like most Wifi devices eat a lot of power compared to 3G.

This seems to be a great case for iPad:
http://www.dodocase.com/

I have a friend here in San Diego who works for MiFi's manufacturer. One of the reasons they will be pushing in their marketing plan is the "battery life" compared to various phone's (hacked or not) wireless router applications.

The phones simply run out of battery much sooner than the MiFi.

Then again, my iPad 3G seems to have solved the battery issue ;-) Also, the iPad's 3G seems to be a "true" unlimited plan. Some guy downloaded over 30G of stuff in his first couple of days of use.

I ordered one of those cases yesterday, they say 4-6 weeks, hopefully it will be sooner. :) For my use, the iPhone wireless router works well. I'm guessing battery life will be maybe two hours tops, when the WiFi router is active.

I received my 3G iPad via FedEx last Friday and have been busy trying out different apps.

Found one that calculates where the light will be for outdoor shots. It's called LightTrac for iPad. It found my house right away (haven't traveled with it yet). Has both satellite and street map views.

Here's a link to the developer's website: http://invisiblebits.blogspot.com/search/label/lighttrac

I finally bought one. I'd been waiting for a 3G and was on the Chandler store waiting list for nine days to no avail.

But I started thinking how with my Sprint mobile Broadband it was really overkill. Called four Apple stores in the Phoenix area and just one, the Gilbert San Tan Mall had a few 16 gb wifi models so I drove down and scarfed one up.

Bought a second Kyocera KR1 mobile router and installed it in my 4Runner plugged into the 12v accessory outlet. Now I only have to pull the Aircard and stick it in the car. It's an old PCMCIA type but I'm grandfathered in on an unlimited contract. If I upgrade it's a new contract and 5 gb limit. I hit 20+ gb most months.

Anyway it's a new toy I didn't need really but hey you only live once. I think it's a good deal at $499 but to my way of thinking the higher end models lose the value proposition. The top end model is only $100 less than a refurbed 13" MacBook Pro !

Well, I finally bit the bullet and ordered also. I called both of the 2 Apple stores within my reasonable (4+ hours round trip) range and both were totally OOS so I ordered through Apple online store--7-10 business days until shipping and then...... Still--at least I'll know its enroute and should still beat the Europeans who are waiting (for the most part--not Jono of course LOL). The Apple case is 3-4 weeks now. I know others have bought other cases, but I really only want one to tilt it for typing and viewing. I doubt that the Ipad leaves the house except when we travel (even though for big trips, I'll still carry my laptop).

I waffled a bit about the wifi issue for some but now Apple says a software resolution coming, so even if I have troubles, I expect it to be handled. Actually I don't expect any issues LOL--but I was just hedging a bit I guess. We have the Verizon Palm Pre Plus mobile hot spots so don't really need 3G version. We are thinking of a trip to Newfoundland in early Fall and cell coverage got a bit nutsy for there anyhow, so we'll end up using wifi mostly in Canada--at least that far in the hinterlands.

I love my Touch, find I read email and a lot of apps/news, etc. before ever opening my main computer or laptop so know I will love the Ipad.
