There's an ImageCount tag in each file in the vendor section. PS can show the Exif vendor data, I forget exactly what it's called - File Info or Image Info or some such.

The value contained in the tag is in hexadecimal. If you don't know how to interpret it, go to Google and type "0x<the value> in decimal" in the search box. Google will calculate and return the value.

Example:

The tag contains '1234'.

Type "0x1234 in decimal" in the google search box, and the displayed answer is '4660'. That's your actual actuation count.

If you go to this site http://www.soens.de/swpage/swpage.html, you can download a small application that with a recent jpeg from the camera will reveal the actuation count. Simply drag and drop the jpeg on the application and the actuation count will appear.
