"Budget" priced good monitor

As the title says I am looking for a monitor for our use that should be between in price the pro ones like a Eizo and the consumer models sold at places like Future Shop. I cringe at paying more for a monitor than I do for a car so perhaps in the around or under one grand price range.

It will be hooked up to a Windows box and used for both photo imagery and some video editing. Neither of us are pros nor do we make much monies from our arts at this time but want some thing more accurate and stable than the $200 ones that we currently have. The purpose is to make artwork and my wife purchased an Epson 4880 for that end. And then start some marketing. Colour is of course important and especially as black and white is still to be done mostly in the darkroom.

Suggestions on makes or models please. We live in a smaller city (61000) and are really 3 hours away from decent stores so it is not just a matter of running out and looking. Thanks for any assistance.
