Scanning negatives - and scratch removal

Hi Everyone -

What is the best dpi to scan negatives if you plan to print them large - say 20x30. Is 4000 dpi sufficient? With a jpg file? This is what I was sent from ScanDigital.

Just got some negatives scanned from ScanDigital -- still need to do some scratch removal.

Anyone know a good way to do this?

I found the polaroid dust/scratch removal tool - but it isnt working that well for scanned TMax400 film - a lot of the grain comes up as being dust/scratches.

Thoughts?

Thank you

Well, for .78 each or whatever the price you paid, you should expect to have to do some additional work on the scan. 4000 ppi is plenty for the size prints you are considering. The best way to deal with scratches is to scan the film with full immersion in a professional scanning fluid, which fills small scratches and micro voids in the emulsion making defects far less visible in the final scan. But that costs more money per scan, so you're back to some manual works.

In Photoshop, the Dust and Scratches filter can help on black and white negs and prints, but the good old Cloning Tool and Healing Brush are your best options. In reality, unless you images are from negs that have been literally walked on in dirt, you should be looking a few minutes per image.
