Pulling out my hair ....grr...

I have PS CS4 running on my MacBook Pro with 6Gb of ram. OS is 10.5.7. It has ran fine all this time. Suddenly in the past week or so, I have a very strange happening which I cannot explain or solve.

Each time I quit Photoshop, I get an error saying that Photoshop has quit suddenly and ask if a report should be sent to Apple. I'm trying to remember what was the last software change before I had this error starting. My best guess is some Bluetooh updates from Apple. Software updates related to PS was Imagenomic's Portraiture 2 but I have removed the plug-in to no avail.

I'm not a Mac expert so if anyone has suggestions for me to try solve this, I'll be very grateful.

Thanks.

Henry,

No Mac expert either, rather new to it myself, but the first thing I would do is to store the error report in a text file. If you open that file it will give you clear indications as to what causes the problem

Then repair permissions on your startup disk where OSX resides.

Discutility --> Choose your startup disc..... click repair permissions. After this has been done, reboot your Mac, and try again.

If that has fixed it, fine. If not we need to look at the error report. Ususally the error description and the culprit causing the error would be found in the first iew paragraphs. But try repair permissions first and, let's see whether that helps.

You're welcome Henry! Repair permissions will take a good while, do not do anything else in the meantime, just let it run.

On a side note, this feature is useful to maintain a healthy Mac, I would recommend to make that a habbit. Personally, I run repair permissions before and after I installed anything, be it an update or new program. On top, I run that once a week.

Hi Henry,

if you click on REPORT it generates a text file that you can send to apple or just safe it as a text and post here. No need to send that to apple though, but just click on it and have a look.

Usually in the first paragraph the cause for that crash will be evident, just post the first few paragraphs here, that should be sufficeint to find out more.

I might not be able to help but there are many around her with lots of more knowledge on Mac. No worries, we get that sorted!:)

Can you please open photoshop, and go to preferences for me? I never saw CS4, but i supose, under preferences/performance there should be an entry called OPEN GL, or 3D acceleration, or GPU settings or the likes, can you check wheter this is activated? If so, deactivate it, and try it again, my best guess is that this is causing the problem.

Another clue might be Rosetta, I see no reason for you to run Rosetta or do you run older versions of software that requires you to have rosetta? But try the above first. Rosetta afaik was used before universal binary for compatibility reaons, but should not be needed anymore in most cases, definately not for photoshop.

I'll also ask Jack to have a quick look, he is much more into the guts of OSX and stuff than I am, may be i am on the wrong track here.

Focus Magic....Understood.

Well  as I said, I am new as well, sorry I can not help more Henry, but I asked Jack to have a look at it.

I think that the SIGSEV entry indicates some memory adress problems afaik.

Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
on Top the 32 bit thingy might be not a good idea, not sure though.

Thread 0 crashed with X86 Thread State (32-bit):
My guess is that your choice to run Rosetta and focus magic is causing the instability, but let's wait what Jack can see before you pull more hair. ;)

You're welcome Henry.

However :banghead:... it sucks. :D

Btw. I was tempted to use FM as well, but decided against it until they come out with universal binary. I do not trust that Rosetta code in context, and it is a crutch for sure.

Henry:

It appears it might be a corrupt sector error. I suggest you completely uninstall CS, being sure to remove all files in all folders, then run repair disk. Then reinstall CS4 fresh. You should deactivate the current installation first.

Thanks Jack. Do I have to totally re-install all the plug-ins later too? Can I keep that folder and copy it back later?

Jack

It depends on if that's where the corrupt sector is. If not, it should be fine, but if so it could be the root of the problem...

I like to thank Georg and Jack for their help.

I spent a little time removing and replacing items in the plug-in folder until I found the culprit that was causing the PS CS4 error. It was a bad plug-in from OnOne. After removing this, everything returned to normal.
