Re: More Fun with Large Format Film Images!

Jim Galli (The Master Of Menisci) had a good thread about it over at Large Format Forum here

I'm not sure why they'd display differently.. i'm using the same links in both threads as the source. I suspect it may actually be the gray background that gives the impression.

Great stuff, Matto. Amazing dynamic range in that last one. No matter the format, or the medium, you've got this derelict stuff nailed!

Birmingham sounds nice right now. I could use some warm weather.

This last one is really great. The paint chips on the mattress give and amazing texture. Love the use of a more shallow DOF here too. Nice.

How's the running going? Are you getting those issues worked out?

Attached is one of my first semi-successful attempts at large format. I'm still getting the focusing process nailed, as its pretty damn hard in the dark.

This was with a Sinar F1 and Schneider Kreuznach 210 f/5.6. I believe exposure was at 30 minutes at f/18 on FP4+.

Still need to do a full res scan, this was just a trial run at 1200dpi. Processed in PS and Split-Toned in Nik SilverFx.

Here's another I decided to throw up as well.

Same info as the last one, but exposure is 55 minutes here. That was a long cold Wisconsin night... ha.

Yeah once you get used to it, its a breeze. That would be cool, would love to.

BTW I did get the Ebony the other day. Been to sick with the flu to go out and play it though. Snowing to beat the band right now anyway. Keep 'em coming.

Got the SV45TE and yep will use it with the BL. Snowing to beat the band here right now, not a good situation for LF digital.

First shots with the Chamonix 45N-2. Schneider Symmar-S 150 on Velvia 50, metered/timed with my iPhone, and scanned with my Epson V750. I'm really happy with my first attempt!

    Rob,

That looks great- if this is a test, looking forward to seeing more!

Had you shot with this kind of back before? How did you find its operation?

    Thanks for sharing,

    Rick

Thanks Rick. Oh yes have used this back quite a bit in the studio as well as field work. Unfortunately there is not a short answer to your question about its operation, but will try to answer as succinctly as possible.

Cutting to the chase I have yet to seen any imaging device its equal, period. But it does take patience and a methodical approach with attention to detail. It is not a quick and dirty system of shooting by any stretch of the imagination and there is a lot of gear to lug around, cables, laptops, battery supplies et al. It does have its limitations but then to some degree all camera systems do.

However if you gravitate toward or are inspired by "slow photography" with ultimate image quality as the final result you will be rewarded. Looking at Betterlight files is addictive to say the least, nothing else compares IMO.

Mostly this image was just a quick field test to get used to the Ebony I had recently purchase which is a nice camera btw.

One more from last night. Just about burnt the highlights to a crisp on this one. The light had changed (more than I thought) as I panned to the right some 20-30 and failed to compensate in the exposure. Took some pushing and shoving in PS to make it work.

    Thanks for looking.

Looking good! Funny never realized Fuji made an instant film, sort of like polaroids I would assume? It seems to have a similar quality to it.

I hear you, too big for me to lug around though. There are deals to be had in LF these days for sure.

No idea, also noticed the odd link and absence. Maybe they are doing some redesigning, maintenance work who knows, or could be the server is down.
