Ah, yes, the "Leica Pro Shop"!

From Leica, the brand that's in touch with the needs of professionals. And since professionals -- especially studio professionals -- tend to congregate in areas where large commercial spaces are available at cost-effective rental rates, where professional services and rentals are readily available, and where media and agency client offices are conveniently located, it makes perfect sense that the first-ever Leica Pro Shop would be in... West Palm Beach, Florida?????????

In view of the types of actual West Palm Beach inhabitants likely to patronize the Leica Pro Shop, perhaps the following qualifications should be added:

-- Strong stomach for kowtowing to overprivileged social parasites;
-- Fawningly obsequious manner;
-- Knack for flattering incompetent photography on short notice;
-- Iron-willed ability to suppress any Marxist or socialist impulses when provoked by the arrogance of the obscenely affluent leisure class;
-- Clipped European accent, impeccable wardrobe, and precisely technical manner a plus.

I'm not quite sure why you have this constant sarcasm towards Leica. The spot in West Palm Beach is with the Photographic Center and where FotoFusion is held:

http://www.workshop.org/

In addition, why not ask David Farkas or Capture Integration about the South Florida area. Last I looked it had a lot of rental houses and was an area that does support a lot of commercial photo activity.

For the same reason I have constant sarcasm toward, for example, BMW and the New York City Ballet: it's not the products, which I find generally admirable, but the fact that they seem disproportionately likely to attract shouty wankers who are more interested in "show" than "go."

Or if you'd prefer it with the bark off: Leicaphilia is photography's oldest surviving subculture, and constant deconstruction of that subculture helps separate its intrinsically valuable elements from those that have simply accreted through the passage of time.

So whaddaya think -- should I apply for the West Palm Beach gig, or what? :rolleyes:

Well,

I must fall into your category of shouty wankers living across the street from Lincoln Center (home of the NY Ballet), driving a BMW and shooting Leica.

You know perfectly well that I didn't mean everyone who's into these things is a shouty wanker... just that shouty wankers are more likely to be attracted to them than they are to, say, Zeiss Ikons, Nissans, and American Repertory Ballet (of Princeton, N.J.)

Don't apply! You didn't surpress yours. Sheesh!

I take it you haven't been in a Honda or Toyota dealership lately. I swear the salespeople act like you're lucky to have the opportunity to be in the presence of a Japanese automobile...

To be honest I have never been around such snobbish people in my life (as it relates to vehicles) and that include being in the Cadillac dealerships (of which my dad only drives,) the Mercedes (which my mom and sister drive,) or BMW (which I eventually plan to drive soon... possibly.) I will say it was enough FOR ME that I would NEVER buy from either company if given the choice.

Maybe it's the area you live in too though.

Small companies who have no interest in conquering the world have to charge more in order to survive. The extra charges cover the cost of the marginal differences in quality that a bespoke service delivers.

These are just economic realities.

Attemting to criticise boutique manufacturers because of their smaller client base and higher prices - is really a form of cultural bias and prejudice - often evidence amongst young people imbued with less experience in life or old style reactionary socialists - whose behaviour and world view is based on having nothing and wishing to share it all with everyone.
The whole working pro stuff is total silliness - in Ancient Egypt one ha to go to the local working pro scribe in order to get something written. We have moved on from this mindset - via innovation and technology - not stasis and decay.

I agree to and extent but the other side of that is that it's just as silly for those who can afford "the best" to gawk at the idea of someone buying a "lower end" product. I believe you just buy the best you can afford or an even better approach is to buy what you like.

I just saw a thread below that bespoke of the said "service". 300 Euros to determine what is wrong with a M8.

The poster just cleaned the electrical contact himself following one Mark Norton's advise and saved several hundred Euros in that process.

Proletarian measure against that premium service?

While I think Ranger 9 should possibly tone back the sarcasm, I do see the point. I am a professional architectural photographer in Atlanta, and I happen to love Leica. I'd like nothing more to see the S2 be a huge success in the professional market. But I have never agreed with, nor have I understood the marketing that company does. West Palm Beach? When I shoot in Miami, West palm Beach might as well be in another country. I realize it is 45 minutes away (assuming it is not in rush hour), but I don't know of any pro's based out of WPB. A destination for Leicaphiles? Maybe. But if I absolutely need something for a job, Capture Integration is right around the corner, and PPR is just down the street. My point being, if they want to attract pro's, they really are going to have to tie into existing support systems for pro's and stop this "hermes" mentality marketing. WPB makes absolutely no sense to me.

The S2 is being touted as a professional tool, and priced accordingly. Hell, I'm the target market for that product (if, and when the t/s wide angle lens actually materializes). Why on earth, would they elect to send it to WPB, when they should be getting it in the hands of folks like Capture Integration or PPR that deal with pro's every day? NY, LA, Chicago, yes. WPB? Are you kidding me?

If, on the other hand, they are intending to continue on with this luxury brand marketing, then I suppose it's the right thing to do, although wouldn't Rodeo Drive, 5th Ave or Ocean Ave make more sense?

I love Leica cameras (especially the glass), but wish somebody who knew how to market a brand would take over and make that company the success it deserves to be (and was in the past)...

My 2 cents....

It is a job application for a sales position.
From first principles what are the important characteristics?
IMHO, the ability to sell whatever to the local market is a pretty strong requirement.
If that ability is lacking it looks pretty much like a no-go.
So I will withdraw my application even though I have been practicing my clipped European accent.

Well it seems the folks that live in Palm Beach County are catching it again. I live there ...Jupiter is 10-15 minutes north of Palm Beach. The logic of the Leica Shop is that its part of the Palm Beach Workshops which attracts a significant number of excellent photographers both pros and amateurs. Palm Beach made the workshops the main tenant of there new fine arts complex. They have always had a decent camera store ..the pro shop....which has been a good Leica dealer with decent stock...it seems that the Leica store will replace that part of the Pro shop.

The layout of the Leica stores doesn t say professional to me...its closer to Cartier. I think the M9 and the new X1 fit this model and they will sell quite a few. The S2 will be interesting....for the cost is no object buyer ..maybe . The store layout appears like a high end jeweler and reminds me of the Paris dealer with the big red awning.

They should have a small exhibition space though to create some draw to the store .

I do agree that Miami would be a better location with all the action at South Beach.. You can t walk down Collins avenue without seeing a photo shoot. They park RV s with the clothing for catalog work right on the street. But you have Dale in Hollywood which is only 20 minutes from South Beach. They are really set up to service the working pro.

:ROTFL:

can i be a shouty wanker in-training?

i live across from a BMW dealer, workout to NYC Ballet, and shoot with a Leica (albeit, the now lowly M8 Classic).

************************************

seriously, i must defend Leica stores and employees. i stayed far away from the one in Paris, positive they would laugh me out of the place. nothing could have been further from the truth. i missed out on some gorgeous used glass -- reasonably priced, with warranty -- because i was so intimidated by my pre-conceived notions.

and every time i've gone to a show/fair, be it large (Photokina -- M8 first shown), small (Arles -- S2 shown), or teeny (local shop in L.A. -- various lenses and such), the people who have manned the booths could not have been nicer and more genuinely helpful.

in fact, my love affair with Leica started in Germany when i was stoned out of my brain on drugs, shortly after breaking my elbow. i wanted to touch all the cameras, one handedly, and they called one of the big mucky-mucks over to the display to make sure it was okay. he gently placed the new M8 in my hand, explaining what it did (as i was clearly clueless) and holding it for me so i could focus the lens. i was so clearly a punter, yet time was given to me. i even left with a free Leica red dot pin affixed to the sling of my non-working arm -- and this was by someone very high up.

the way i've been treated, in every instance, has made me feel special. and, yes, like i deserved a Leica. Ranger 9 can scoff at this, but customer service is what it's all about when you're a smaller company and i think Leica does it brilliantly.

in this day and age of internet, i wish more manufacturers followed suit.

Cam, I think I have a Leica pencil and such memorabilia. I might have lost a few of the small trinkets and such. If I find them, I will let you know.

They did not do anything for me though.

you are too kind! :p

seriously, i know i sounded far too fan-boy, mea culpa, but that stupid pin made a huge impression on my drug-addled brain as did the way i was treated at a show as immense as Photokina... most everyone else was quite rude about my obvious impediment.

and, truth be told, my favourite camera to use is still the Epson R-D1...
