Recommendations for first m lens for m8

Hey all - looking to get an m8 and I am currently looking for recommendations for a first lens.

I was thinking the 28mm elmarit. Any other suggestions would be great! Thanks

That would be an ideal M8 starting point for reasonable money. If you can stretch to a Summicron it's simply outstanding.

Daniel,
You can't go wrong with either of those lenses. You will have to decide which focal length suits you better.
The 28 cron is an ASPH lens and the 35 cron is a pre-ASPH version. They render a bit differently.
You can use a black marker to code the lenses temporarily or you can send them into Leica for coding.
There are lots of threads on this site and on LUF that contain tons of M8 and lens information.

Do you prefer *really* sharp lenses, or lenses which are merely sharp, but a bit more gentle with detail, especially with portraits, but perhaps have a tiny bit of CA? That is more or less the difference between the pre-ASPH and ASPH lenses. Some prefer the boke of one, some prefer the other.

what about this cron - will the lack of 6-bit coding make a difference? The new cron is like 4200 at B&H.

This one at KEH is like 2200. Quite a big difference.
Get Leica to code it or hand code using the M-Coder & sharpie (assuming you are using an UV/IR filter) and you'll be set.

The price on the 28mm cron is great and you can not go wrong with this lens, wish I could afford that lens today, having a 35 and a not a 28.
