Re: S Is For Show Us Your S2 Shots

Haven't posted for a while, so here are a few random S2 shots from this summer's vacation. We rented a large old 1880s house in Saugatuck, Michigan and brought along the whole family ... so most "alone photo time" was relegated to early AM before the gang all woke up.

I usually shoot people in most every shot, but this time I decided to break with that and do some studies of this bustling resort town on Lake Michigan when it isn't bustling. We've been to this town so many times that I almost didn't take anything more than a P&S.

    Fog is fun!

    Marc,
You are lucky to live where there is such beautiful fog, all we have been seeing down here in paradise is rain on top of more rain on top of ...
I really like the second image in this set, it is beautifully done.

    Thank you.

I usually do not shoot many flowers, but I had the Hasselblad HC100/2.2 bolted on when took my little doggie for a morning stroll and took this snap.

A little of the 110/2 FE character with this lens ... I usually use it for portraits especially the ladies ... or with the Hasselblad HTS/1.5 for product shots. Quite sharp when stopped down.

However, you do have to watch out for CA on the 100.

    Thanks Douglas.

There was fog because it had rained all night, and just stopped when I went out and got that shot you like ... then it started raining agin. The S is well sealed, so rain is not a terrible deterrent. Get out there and take some photos!

    Lovely images!
I have been thinking about dumping my H4D and lenses and going with Leica S. I don't like Hasselblad's direction.
    What is your take?
    Did you switch to Leica-S?

    Thanks,

    Hi Mike,

I'll keep this as brief as possible since it is an image thread:

At one time I had a H4D/40 and H4D/60. I was offered a good deal on a new S2P and given a week to test one before buying. I compared H4D/40 images side-by-side and determined it was worth switching for a few reasons: More mobile and convenient form factor which promotes taking with; simple fast controls; and the lenses are stellar as you'd expect from Leica (not to mention they are all pretty fast max apertures for MFD); and the S system is a dual shutter camera that syncs to 1/1000 or goes up to 1/4000 focal plane ... which the H doesn't do ... so it is more versatile and a joy to use.

I kept the H4D/60 while I had a commercial need for files that big, then semi-retired and also sold that. I kept the HC100/2.2 and HTS/1.5 which I use on the S2P via the Leica made H-to S adapter. I also kept the HC50-II for a while but eventually sold it (it was quite good on the S2).

So far haven't missed the H kit although I did like working with it ... however, I agree with you regarding the direction Hasselblad seems to have taken. Not sure MFD is a priority with them at all now, and their energy and treasure is being spent on the dubious "blinging and branding" of Sony stuff. While I do not blame them for looking elsewhere for profit since so many camera categories are bleeding red ink, I think what they did is a mistake, and the marketing communications are monumental exaggerations that parasitically feed off a more storied past.

I'll echo Marc's opinion here too, also brief. I use an S2 to shoot interior and exterior arch. professionally after having used various H digital backs and cameras for some years. I still use the HTS, some H lenses and some S lenses. The S2 is a pure pleasure to work with in all aspects including tethered (never a hiccup unlike the H). Build like a rock, weather proof. Reliable as the day is long. Love it.

Re: S Is For Show Us Your S2 Shots

I agree with David -- both looked fine to me on Chrome on a Mac (Eizo and Retina), but this version has a lot more shadow detail.

The S2's flexibility impresses me sometimes...I went on a quick vacation to the East of the country a few days ago, and I had a very long drive back home...about ten hours. It is a beautiful drive, however, and ten hours driving in Iceland is nothing like ten hours driving in the states. There is hardly any traffic, and you are driving through stunning scenery the whole way. I actually took these photos one handed out the window, balanced on my opposite shoulder, while driving at 100kph. Not particularly safe I guess! That said, there where no cars coming, and I was looking at the road. Still, my photo ninja skills must be developing, as I didn't even really have to rotate these...they came out rather well...sharp to 100% too. They were taken somewhere in North central Iceland, on a particularly stormy summer day.

Question is, does this little factory in Antwerp build better sensors than the likes of Truesense, Dalsa, Toshiba and last but not least Sony? We always hear they are able to make relatively small amounts, which was needed for the M and that certainly will be the case for the S. But do they make the 'best' sensor?

One more reason why I don't think this upscaled M Cmosis sensor is likely to happen is that this would yield ~ 37 MP. Though there are some that would be fine with so much resolution, I guess the market will be expecting more progress if Leica introduces a new S sensor at say, Photokina 2014, six years after the announcement of the S2. Which brings up another question: Should they go for better high ISO, higher resolution, or a compromise?

I know, it's all speculation, but I do think it's of paramount importance for the future of the S-line that Leica choose a next generation sensor very carefully, not based on what's available at Cmosis, or what they are familiar with. And also that S users think about their preferred future options and make their thoughts and expectations known to Leica.
I think cmosis already have a sensor with higher pixel density than the current M sensor, the 3.1micron CHR70M..CHR70M CMOS image sensor - CMOSIS - CMOS Image Sensors

I am not sure where else they could turn for a new sensor?Dalsa or truesense?or maybe sony?the fact that they are already working with cmosis might be a strong indicator..

I would think this would be the logical course, having worked long and hard (a continuing journey) on the M CMOSIS chip, the road to success with a similar but higher res (50+?) CMOSIS chip for a future S would be well paved. For me at least, 70mp would certainly be most welcome.

    B E A U T I F U L !

This image, as disarmingly simple as it is, exemplifies why I love the S2 and its lenses.

The damned rendering is so subtile and exquisite ... wonderfully delicious aesthetics that transcends what the image is about. The look and feel stands on its own as art. Congratulations!

The first time I shot an S2 years ago, I did one of a friend that had a similar look and feel, and that kept me hooked until they got the system up and running enough get one.

Is it just me, or is the Bokeh in the above castle shot at f2.5 a little "buzzy" for the 70?

I wonder if you perhaps added a little too much pre or post sharpening?

There was no sharpening on backround just PP colours via Alien Skin Exposure profiles. Maybe it looks "buzzy" for you due to contrasty light abeam before sunset. For me it´s looks good even after postprocessing (a bit more contrasty image than SOOC) with enough foreground "pop" in image

No, the buzz is in the bokeh itself to my eyes, not a contrast issue, and unusual that's all. Probably is something you did in post, possibly the AS action.

    Yes, much better.

PS: When you embed from filcker, PLEASE use their medium size image -- their server is so friggin slow it makes our site hang while the full size image ports from their end. Other alternative is to use our free gallery here -- it's lightning fast.

Thanks Jack,It was caused by a Nik filter,I find you have to be extra careful with Nik filters when you use them on images from low pass filter free sensor''s,,,

Also noted about the embedding from ,I will use 1024x680 in future ..

Re: S Is For Show Us Your S2 Shots

Did anyone tried this M* 400/4 beast on S2? I´am really enjoying M* 300/4 and this could be a good performer too, but too heavy and for me too pricey just now maybe some day

Re: S Is For Show Us Your S2 Shots

I didn't try any of the Pentax lenses on the S2, but the Contax 645 350/4 would be a much more interesting lens to me. They are still fair priced for what they are and the Carl Zeiss 1.4x Mutar is exceptional (works fantastic on my 140/2.8 and 210/4 Contax 645).

I would be very, very interested if anybody has photographs done with the 350/4 Carl Zeiss on the S2.

Several samples are regularly floating on eBay.

Beautiful shot of your wife above btw ;-) And please do share some Pentax 300/4 shots as well!

Re: S Is For Show Us Your S2 Shots

I´ll upload more shots with 300/4 soon
Contax 350/4 is a beautiful lens with AF but expensive in combination + adapter to S2 (1920 USD) + 1.4x Mutar (600 USD).

Here is one with Hasseblad HC [email protected]
In this small picture it´s not visible but on full res his left eye is focused spot on and the right eye is already OOF
