On that note, has anyone had any issues with the camera detecting a CF or an SD card ? Whenever I insert one, it says card not detected. I then take it out, format it in the computer (FAT32 / MacOSX Extended journalled ) and re-insert, then the camera "sees it".

So I'm having the same problem with my sensor that I did with the camera I sent in for a replacement.
This is the second camera that has had the same issue, so I'm starting to see a trend here. I'm half tempted to keep it a few months and see if the issue gets worse or not, before sending this one in.

Did yo rever get a real response from Leica about the diagnose other then "broken CCD" ?
This looks awfully much like the "green flare" digital M users described in the early times of the M8 I believe.
The culprit back then was a very strong light source (sun, pointed strong spotlight, car headlights), which just at the right angle would hit the very edge of the CCD and therefore cause this green flare phenomenon.
Back then it was diagnosed as a rare (and repeatable) issue nothing to do with a defect of the camera, but rather a design issue which allowed this rare instance of "sensor over load" when really strong light is hitting just at the right angle the edge of the sensor.
I really hope it is just that and not a defective camera. I personally have never seen this before though on any S (only have had two loaners and my own S2 so far though).

It shows the things how they are (or how I see them), some things look even more pretty on S-Images than in reality
menos - Yes, it's the same as pictured. Funny you mention that. As I asked Leica if it was in fact just some type of sensor overload from flare. They responded that it was circuitry connected to the sensor that was the issue and they would replace my camera for me. Nothing more.. Then I had loads of problems with Leica N.J.
In the end though, I got a new camera, and the same issue is happening all over. Two out of two now, not off to a good start

Adam, please don't take my hunch as a fact - it just looks so absolutely very similar of what we got back a few years when this happened with the Leica M8 and M9.
If this would happen to me with my S2, my very first reaction when seeing such a shot on the LCD would be to repeat the shot, taking care of the positioning of the strong light source (just turn your position a fraction of an angle).
Here is something I could find about the "green stripe problem" with the M8/9 cameras:

specifically this photo shows the phenomenon, caused by a strong light source hitting the edge of the sensor in just the right angle to overload the photocells in the sensor half next to the light source:

Nevertheless, I would reproduce the issue, save DNG files and get in touch with a technical specialist of the S cameras in WETZLAR/ Germany.
I am sure this is the very best source of getting a confirmation whether this is behavior to be expected or indeed a camera defect related issue.
Good Leica NJ supplied a new camera (the most important for you to keep working). I am a bit surprised though by the lack of detailed information, helping you to be assured of the cause of the issue.

Adam - it's always possible something is amiss with your camera, but I don't think so. You're shooting with extreme backlighting. CCD aimed at sun w/ wide open lens = saturated sensor and really bad things happen. It's like a domino effect, the light fills each well and whole squares / rectangles can get funky. Also, the S' CCD sensor has centerfold - usually not visible but with moderate editing it can become visible in blue skies.
You're bumping ISO sometimes too, thus making the sensor more susceptible. If the lens is stopped down to F8 or F11, that usually reigns it in. I've been through the Phase One P25, P30+, P65+ and Leica M8, M9, S2 and 006. They all do it. CMOS does much better in this area. First time I saw this with the P25 and M8, I freaked out. Now, I just stop-down the lens or try to find a way to block direct sun.
I'm offering this feedback in hopes that you can enjoy camera instead of wondering if it's about to die. If you're seeing this only when shooting into or towards the sun at wide apertures, then everything is probably technically okay. This GetDPI thread has some technical info -

John - Thanks for the tips. Yeah, I've noticed it happens in the conditions you've mentioned. You and menos are probably right, I'll take your advice and not worry so much about it.

Mike Tindall, the last member of the victorious English 2003 Rugby World Cup winning side to hang up his boots He played for Gloucester for many years until last year, hence the "Glawsfamily" quote on the frame. Now married to the Queen's granddaughter, Zara Phillips. There were rumours that he had been discretely asked to have his nose straightened in time for his Royal Wedding. He didn't.
This was shot last thursday, as part of my long term project "In the Frame", which has now been running for over 4 years with over 100 famous people captured in this manner.
