S Is For Show Us Your S2 Shots

I thought it'd be fun to start a Leica S2 image thread here in the Leica section. It's hard to find a thread of S images on the web (I know the S2 user base is still small) ... this might even be the first.

I'd like this to be an image thread, if possible, versus the technical forensics and price ticket shock comments that go on in other S2 threads. Hopefully, it'll provide a venue for those who have taken the S2 plunge to have no fear of posting images before they shrink into the shadows never to be heard from again.

Re: S Is For Show Us Your S2 Shots

To demonstrate the outright disregard I have for making a good impression with high ticket, big sensor systems ... and of course, my general irreverent nature, I thought that I'd lead off with the bane of all image threads ... a pet photo.

Count me in, as an admirer at least. Won't be getting and S2 anytime soon, but I certainly am looking forward to seeing the image here.

Woweee! Congrats, Kurt. I am looking forward to your images. I say that with a bit of trepidation, as your wonderful Noctilux shots put me into the buyer's column for that lens (by the way, I doubt I'd ever sell it)....I can't afford an S2 so I'll have to live vicariously through you.

Enjoy the ride in your new wheels, Kurt!

Great idea. Did I get it right that you took the plunge and got the S2 (I remember you were thinking about this)? Nice dog as well.

Re: S Is For Show Us Your S2 Shots

Great idea for a thread Kurt! No doubt it's going to have many of us scraping the bottom of our piggy banks for all the loose change we can gather up to put towards a S2 body. For myself it will take that plus winning the lottery!

Looking at these and other S2 images, especialy the actual full rez file, certainly demonstrates a look and characteristics to an image that's different than what we normally see coming from most full frame 35mm sized digital imagers.

    Looking forward to seeing more.

Here is a shot of my lovely wife Juliana, taken with the S2 and 120mm APO-Macro (in the parking lot outside our store). Hand-held, wide-open at f/2.5. Autofocused on eyeball and recomposed.

Sorry.... I actually don't have any S2 shots of my dog Scottie.

Kurt, can't wait to see more shots as you get into the groove with your new S2.

ceh - great shot of the green balls. David love the shot of your wife (even if I have seen it before). Terry - glad you braved the subject matter and between you you've managed to come up with the goods.

Sorry, can offer only a link.
    http://gallery.lfi-online.de/gallery...1962&cat=11278

Please click on pictures for description.

These S2 shots (with 70/f2.5 Summarit-S) are a little different than what has been shown here so far. (That's what the job called for.)
I pushed the camera to its limit, yet the results are pretty cool.
Maybe not all that visible in those small jpegs but please believe me when I say those shots are blurry (motion blur) and sharp at the same time.
Also, everything happened in camera, no colour manipulation in post.

Jono: Me too! Although there's a poster at the Leica store. I could pick up a body and a couple of lens up for about $1,000/ mo.

Nice work Harald. I about swallowed my tongue when I saw that you'd shot these with an S2! Then I saw it was a loaner. When does yours arrive?

Doug, the viewfinder is a manual focuser's dream even with the stock focusing screen. It will be even better when the split image screen comes out. I read where Kurt just picked up a Hasselblad 250mm and another S2 user is getting an adapter to use his Pentax 400mm. I can't wait to hear how these combinations work out. I am seriously considering the Pentax 400mm or 600mm.

Great to see the thread taking shape. Thanks for all of the input, everyone!

Thanks for the comments Amin, Steve, Matt, GMB, Dave, Gary and Lloyd.

Ashwin ... never say never. It should be an interesting journey. You don't know how hard it was to give up the Noctilux.

Thanks for posting images CEH, Terry, David, 2X2, and Woody. Thanks for posting something also, Guy ... and for providing this place for us all to continue to have so many interesting conversations about our gear choices.

Osman, that's great to know about the name meaning ... I'm glad it doesn't mean something like chump or turkey!

Doug and Gary, I found a copy of the Zeiss Hasselblad 250/4 on KEH for $600. I haven't done much research on the lens, but for $600 it was a no-brainer to give it a try ... considering the price of Leica lenses. The lens is scheduled to arrive this coming week. I'll post a few images when I've had a chance to try it out. There is a pair of Red Tail Hawks that have been hanging around in the woods down the road that I'd love to get a closer look at.

Here are a couple of shots from yesterday ... first snowfall of the year. The farmer down the road made great use of the cold snowy weather to get his Christmas tree sales off to a great start.

Hi Matt, thank you for the compliment. Actually all of these photos are with the 70mm and are full frame. The rafting photo was taken at the site of the 1996 Olympic whitewater events on the Ocoee river in southeast Tennessee. This location was designed for spectators and it is very easy to get close to the action. Unfortunately, they only put high water flow through this section of the river a few times a year for recreational purposes because it bypasses the hydroelectric generation plant.

I appreciate the positive feedback. I am working on my landscape photography skills. It helps when you have photogenic locations near home. However, there is still a bit of luck involved in getting weather conditions to cooperate.

This location was designed for spectators and it is very easy to get close to the action. Unfortunately, they only put high water flow through this section of the river a few times a year for recreational purposes because it bypasses the hydroelectric generation plant.
Mark: Well timed. Very impressive. It's going to be a great vicarious thrill to see the S2 put through its paces.

Re: S Is For Show Us Your S2 Shots

Here's one from this afternoon as I try to get acquainted with the Hasselblad 250/4 lens on the S2 via adapter. This is handheld at (f8?) ... it was 12 degrees fahrenheit so no I didn't pay too much attention to my settings or spend the time to set up a tripod.

Kurt, that Hassy screams on your S2! GREAT idea this thread too. I am really looking forward with envy and some degree of trepidation as we all face the S2 slippery slope!

I am hoping some of you will please post some great stuff from the 35mm. Probably the way I am headed, interest wise anyway. I really want to hate this camera because I can't justify the cost. It was easy to do when all you could get were two lenses, and both of those if you were lucky in the allocation draw for that month.

Adapters available for me to shoot my favorite MF glass is a whole other story, and brings an easy no not interested to a screeching halt, if only long enough to look with an open mind. Best of luck with this thread guys, kind of reminds me of the old DMR days!

Re: S Is For Show Us Your S2 Shots

Kurt and others are making it difficult for to just stand there and not want to jump into MF digital (and especially the S2) bandwagon. I did some of this format digitally a while ago, but in the last couple of years, great technical strides have been made. This thread is a great idea, especially when the images go hand and hand with some discussion, especially about alternative lenses for the S2.

Still, one can't get away from the the slippery slope Chuck described and the sacrafices one needs to make to even think about such a system.

Oh look, isn't that moire' I see in those repetitive horizontal lines that sit at 45 degrees, on the right side-center of the image you just posted Kurt? See, my decision to just look at all these pretty S2 images and go no further, is the right decision (at least I keep telling myself that over and over...LOL!)
