As an ardent advocate of visualisation I do not like deciding for color or B&W from a computer screen. The point is to see your subject in B&W and decide whether it needs color or not before you take the shot. The MM forces you to do just that.
Thanks for your comment. I see your point, but not everyone can (or wants to) carry both a Monochrom and a color camera (much less an M).

In your case, your point stands and my hat is off to you .

    .
Question is if you have to carry both or if you can decide before and then just focus on either color or b&w once you got out.

That's what I did. I decided to shoot B&W only for one year, and only with a 50mm lens as well. I sold every piece of camera gear I had and purchased a MM and a Summilux and its been about 4 months now and I feel that my photography skills has developed substantially in that time. Eliminating a bunch of options and simplifying forces you to focus on doing what you can do a lot better than if you have several options available (color or B&W? 28mm? 35mm? 50mm? 75mm? 90mm?). My shots has only gotten better the simpler and more limiting my gear is.

Re: Fun with the Leica M Monochrom

First time shooting with the Monochrom and 35 Lux FLE, great combination, and absolutely blown away by the files they produce. I thought the M9 and latest Noctilux were good and I tried photographing track cycling in the Velodrome in Manchester with those. They were good but I think I am going to enjoy the Monochrom much more.

Edit: have removed the larger tiff files and replaced with jpeg versions. Thanks Ed for highlighting.

Borge, I can in a way relate to that. I got the MM + Summilux. Staying away from the temptation of getting a 2nd lens. I wanted to take away the FL equation from my shooting, in a way, good or bad it's a risk I took and am taking.

Apologies, it was the tiff file I attached instead of the jpeg. Will see if I can edit the post.

Now have the smaller jpeg images attached.

It's been a while since I posted from the MM here. Here are a few, with various old lenses:

    Canon 85 mm f/1.8 LTM

    Nikkor P.C. 10.5 cm f/2.5 LTM

    35 mm f/2 Summicron v1 (8 element)

    Canon 100 mm f/2 LTM

Kurt, regardless of which camera you've used for your B&W imagery, your photographic eye and skills in composing images that resonate with the viewer are always inspiring. I especially liked B&W dreams from this set.

Dave, I continue to not only admire your unique processing of monochrome files which are quite different than those of others, but also have been enjoying the way you capture moments of everyday life...excellent!

Ashwin, I'm living vicariously through your eyes as you explore many unique optics when used on the monochrome. Many of these lenses images take on a whole new life when used exclusively for B&W. Your pic of "The Scowl" gets me every time...she's an adorable cutie! Looking forward to see more of your monochrome/classic lens images.

Posting this because of my surprise (by this time I shouldn't be surprised at the DR of this camera). I had been expecting to see silhouettes at the end of the hall. Ferry Building, San Francisco, 50mm Summicron, yellow filter. My wife said, I think they'd be more interesting as silhouettes than as "the iPhone people."

I can only speak for myself, but sometimes we're all so concerned about making "art" with our cameras that we loose sight that some of our best and most memorable shots are of those so near and dear to us....especially those moments that illustrate just how silly and fun life can be

Interesting photograph and discussion on DR . I ve shot with the M9 in that exact location maybe half a dozen times (Pete s in to the left and its a good resting place while waiting for the Ferry ).

The photograph looks like you pulled back the shadows in post ?

Yeah, if you look at the image from an iPad then it gives a quasi silhouette appearance. In actuality, the face details are very visible.

18mm SEM. This is actually the infamous lens correction plus stress the file bug in LR. I brought the lower values forward quite a bit with local adjustments. I
ve fixed it by dialing up the noise reduction a bit.

    Thanks for the heads up.

I wonder if I shot these in color as the patterns of the "banig" were colorful. Part of the challenge and fun with the MM I guess...

Wowowow, simply stunning, Dave. That last one of the mats, and the 2 before, just blow my mind. great images, great processing, and great job through and through!

Woody, great fog shot. It's lovely to see modern glass tamed by fog on the MM...this shot has classic written all over it...

Dave, as Ashwin said..shots of the mats were terrific, especially the last one although your the entire posted series is excellent!

Woody, the mood created by the fog is captured extremely well by the MM...simply a lovely shot!

A sort of real life chip chart: driving across town about ten in the morning, at a stop light, I stuck my camera out the window to grab this one. The content is nothing like the intense humanity and or scenic emotion we've been seeing in many shots here, but even so, it gives me a lift seeing what this camera can do:

Re: Fun with the Leica M Monochrom

Can I issue an appeal to those folks who have the MM for sometime now but have not shown any pics to post a few?

I still do not have one, yet...
