He was full of comments about the camera and the photo but rapidly lost interest when I made it clear that it is a monochrome only camera.

    Hi Bob, Thank you!

I was there last week. Very little time to make any snaps (it was a family urgency-personal visit). I only had an iPad. Yes, there was WiFi pretty much everywhere. I did my masters there (IIT, Bombay) a while back and the last visit was ~14 years ago. We do visit India more frequently but not Mumbai.

    Appreciate your kind comments!

A family living on the pavement in front of the hotel I was staying. 3 little children including a tiny bay! These are migrant workers from some village. Not homeless beggars and they are not even "rich enough" to make it to the biggest slum in the world (There is a slum tour, as I understood. Very well organized, guided tours just for foreigners for photography, video, documentary and such!). I will have to go again specifically for that one of these days. It will take days and perhaps weeks to cover it.

    Mumbai.

Re: Fun with the Leica M Monochrom

Hi Dave, Appreciate your kind words very much!

I had shot in monochrome in the business district of Mumbai in 1980 when I was a student with a Yashica Electro 35 and respooled B&W film. I could compare (from a few existing prints) how the light got registered. Even near sunset, it is quite harsh.

This shot of a vendor (he had a kitchen scale and was offering that as a service to the passerby to measure their weight) would have been nearly impossible on a monochrome film. Getting so much details of his dark skin while still getting some structures on hazy clouds (top right) out of the MM shot justified (again) how great a sensor/camera this is.

Untitled by Vivek Iyer, on Flickr
Leica MM, Rokkor 40/2, Yellow filter.

Walking around Mumbai with the MM was very very safe. Everyone and anyone noticed the camera but most thought it was an old camera as it does not look like a DSLR. Only once it got identified (by a Britisher) as a Leica M9. Photographing anyone was easy and most were more than willing to be photographed. Super photo friendly surroundings. One does have to be careful to be with a camera near certain buildings. There are major security checkups while entering any mall for instance (not my place of interest, anyway).

The man on the right noticed that I was photographing the two flower vendors (them) and the older one had moved away to potential customer. He called him by his side and asked me to try again!

Re: Fun with the Leica M Monochrom

The fun thing about working with the Monochrom is that I start seeing what would be rather mundane in color but can produce interesting images in B&W. These garages in this picture looked rather ordinary but in B&W especially when increasing the contrast a bit you really can appreciate how beat up and marked they are. This image was taken after dusk, 24 Lux wide open at high ISO, handheld.

Re: Fun with the Leica M Monochrom

One of the striking things about your images Vivek, is capturing the old mixing with the new in terms of the "changing times" and transitions taking place in India. So much apparently hasn't changed in decades while in other aspects, modernism in technology and the way of life is rapidly moving into the 21st century. It's a study in contrasts illustrated in many different ways and it's often just as powerful that it was captured in B&W as it would have been to capture in color...maybe more so in some circumstances. A facinanting journey across the city! Thanks!

    Thank you, Dave.

The old and new mishmash persists and probably will forever, in India.

A young lady in her traditional garb, complete with an old fashioned purse made of cloth. Most likely she did not go to school not for lack of money or facilities but because she became of age and is a girl.

Just a few feet away, a couple of average middle class college girls.

There still is the same old compassion for the old and vulnerable. An old lady from the neighborhood (suburban Mumbai). She got some help from the roadside vendors.

There is a look and smoothness, clarity and tonality to this image that just sucks me in . It does so without appearing to be excessively sharp as so many similar digital images might appear photographing the same scene. Reminds me maybe more of of B&W imagery from medium format I'm used to seeing with regards to these properties. Love the image for it's look and presentation of simplicity. very very nice!
