Woody, this is anything else then odd. I like the images and I think the MM should be used exactly where it should not be used in the first place. This will bring out the most interesting pictures.

I like the tonality and the drama of the sky. Would love to see some more odd pictures.

Re: Fun with the Leica M Monochrom

So I'm exactly one month into my MM. I'm finding that it's has a subtly steep learning curve, but it's very rewarding to make the effort. The tonality is lovely, but almost always takes some manipulation in post. I find myself using local adjustments a lot - just like in the darkroom. I see in black and white better than in color - it's simplifying for me to start there.

For me the MM and four lenses (18, 24, 35 and 50) is an ideal travel kit. I'm using the 18mm super elmar in preference to the WATE at this point.

You're making this very difficult for me Woody - I've had an MM for 5 months . . . (lucky me) but now it's due to go back, and I'm having quite a lot of anguish about it - these shots definitely don't help!

Re: Fun with the Leica M Monochrom

More. I had a rotten day in front of a computer doing the administrative part of my day job.. At about 4:00 PM I fled to take advantage of the perfect light by taking the Staten Island ferry. My kit was the MM, 50mm DR summicron (and 040 filter), 35mm Lux Asph (020 filter) and 24mm lux (ditto).

I cleaned my sensor since the last series which has eliminated the burden of spotting in post.

    Two frames (50mm) stitched:

BTW one of the things that I've learned is that it really is ok to let specular highlights blow out if that's what makes sense in terms of the overall exposure and the mood of the picture. The transitions to fully blown out are fine.

Intersting to note that you play around with the exposure comp quite a bit. Which metering mode(s) do you use?

For someone who never experienced BW film, I was concerned that after the MM comes out, I would get sick of looking at all the BW images. But I'm happy that hasn't happen yet The subtleties of each photographers' contrasts, tones, and POV is never boring. In fact, I find myself converting more of my own images to BW, much to the dismay of my significant other :P

    Lovely capture, Woody and Matt....

David, I just got my MM. I too was worried about not being able to "see" in color while in NYC...found the focus on composition, light and dark to be liberating...almost like shooting film, without the limitations of 36 exposures...processing is different after the fact, but the experience is enjoyable

Just like using B&W film and doing your own processing & printing, selection of how the final image will look from the MM, will depend greatly on the choices the photographer makes from their exposure preferences to the myriad of post processing selections, both in the RAW converter/post processing program of their choice as well as Nik Silver EFX.

As was shown in many of the early files Jono kindly provided here on GETdpi for members to play with and adjust, personal preference and vision I believe plays a more important role in B&W images than color.

Re: Fun with the Leica M Monochrom

David/Ashwin/Dave: I think you guys are right on. In some ways, the constraints and commonality of the B & W format make the differences in each photographer's intent and input more striking. The camera's ISO and resolution capabilities expand the creative possibilities, but always within the, somewhat linear, structure and limits of B & W. I think that's a plus.

    Cheers, Matt

Re: Fun with the Leica M Monochrom

Holy crap - this thread is going to be SERIOUSLY bad for my wallet. I have total monochrom lust! Fabulous imagery here that is making me reassess my camera choices. I was seriously considering getting a FPS Alpa but I'm being dragged back into my love of Leica M again. (Confession - I have complete and utter seller's remorse from selling all of my M digital gear and lenses )

    Damn, damn, damn ...

WOW! Fantastic image Jono. I love the abstract nature of this and I'm having a hard time relating it back to my days in rural Cambridgeshire.

    Hi Graham
Caspar says thank you - sometimes he feels unappreciated (especially by landlords when he jumps neatly onto bar stools!).
Actually, I'd have had him the other way around, with the bar taps and bottles in the background, but he seems to resent being a photographer's model!

It seems that there are many rules in life, but very few are universal . . . . one of these is that you will always regret selling Leica kit!

    Here is an oddity.
I bought a cheap Leica M to R adapter from ebay for a laugh.
Here is a shot taken with the MMonochrom with the Leica 12-35 zoom - interestingly a lens which doesn't perform well on either the NEX, or 43, with soggy corners. I wasn't really expecting much. Focusing has to be using the measurements on the lens, but at least that's easy with a wide angle.

anyway - not a magical picture I'm afraid, but it's certainly sharp!

    Looking a bit overexposed, Jono?

Love the expression on the dog's face.
