@docmoore - Bob, these are looking good. Wow, you got a silver MM! What lens did you use for this series of shots?

Re: Fun with the Leica M Monochrom

    Hi Dave,

    Nothing like your series!

These were done with the Voigtlander 35 Nokton F1.4 Single Coat lens...fairly low contrast with a bit jittery bokeh at 1.4 but sharp enough when stopped down to 4.0.

Nice to be back with the Monochrom ... nothing renders quite like this sensor.

    Regards,

    Bob

Thanks! I do find the WATE rather challenging—almost as if I had tunnel vision.

Lagananny has always been called a dolmen and the plural is dolmens. They are common throughout most of Ireland, though Legananny is unusual because the uprights are so slender. Before they were called dolmens, they were called 'cromlechs', nowadays the preferred name is 'portal tomb'. Dolmen and portal tomb are said to be derived from the Breton dual (table) and maen (stone). They are megaliths, from the neolithic age, around 4000BC to 2400BC (and thus older than the pyramids of Giza).

I was curious to see how the MM would do with studio lights.. It was rushed, and the kids were impatient, but overall, I am happy with the tonality/detail.

What lights, placed where with what modifier … and what lens?

    Thanks!

I used a 90mm APO summicron. I had to crop it a bit as I was at the minimum focus distance as it was. The lighting consisted of a medium soft box + grid, camera left - perpendicular to the subject. You can make out the grid lines, which seem to blend right in with his pupil in a blackhole kind of way.

I took a few more similar shots of my other two boys using the same lighting. It is amazing how similar, yet different they are. The soft box grid lines don't flow as nicely with them - but I'm lucky. It is hard enough to manually focus on a moving subject let alone line up the reflections in a pupil

Here's another parkscape: Live Oak Park, Berkeley.

My partner Sarah said it looks like a 'Victorian' picture, and I think she's right: it might be mistaken for a corner of an English garden?

IMO it looks too contrasty here, but it prints well.

Yes, possibly - but I think that it's more likely to be mistaken for an ENTIRE English garden, than just a corner of one...!

We don't have much room here... it's only a small island...

    Seriously?

Between the Penines, Snowdownia, Borderlands, Northsea vistas, Cornwall and North or West Yorkshire, wild Highlands...

Not to mentions CS Lewis' view of an ever expanding infinity between two blades of grass..."The Great Divorce"

    Never seemed small to me.

Other than the fact that you can drive from one end to the other in less time than one can cover my home state Texas...

However walking the length of the UK in winter is a whole other proposition...

No small is relative and in no sense is Brittania small...

    Regards,

    Bob
