Glad to have my MATE back from Leica, where its loose front end was tightened up again. Since it was a 'redo,' they took only 10 days.

When I saw this scene I thought it was rather pretty; but with a bit of cropping it looks (to me) like a vegetarian dinosaur nibbling on the bushes.

Photos shared here are fantastic. Here is one I would like to share, and one that represents the true reason we get five-figure camera systems -- to photograph our pets. Here is Sarah, my best subject; because, unlike most cats that show respect by looking away, Sarah does not show respect and never looks away. She would win any stare down. MM 50/1.4 ASPH:

    Hi Ashwin,

Nice job of capturing the action, with lots of shadow detail.

I have a question, tho: The good old W-Nikkor isn't a contrasty lens, yet the highlights in nos. 1 & 2 don't show as much detail as I'd hoped to see. So I wonder if that's perhaps a 246 characteristic, or something about processing, or just the subject matter?

Great question. Most of the shots were taken in the harshest of mid-day lighting circumstances, and the W Nikkor does get contrasty a bit more when stopped down, where it looses its glow and becomes rather clinical. I prefer its look wide open, but I didn't have an ND filter on hand, and with the M246's base ISO of 320 ISO, coupled with the bright light, I was stopped down between f/5.6-f/8 most of the time. Some of the impact for me, came in the contrast, so I did makes some editing choices to sink the blacks a bit....

Re: Fun with the Leica M Monochrom

I expect this is old hat to you long-time MM shooters, but please allow this new owner to gush a little about its files. Here's a crop of a section of the image I posted yesterday. It's not just the resolution, but also the acuity, delicate tones and tonal transitions, especially in the light tones. I'm wowed and so glad I finally went forward with this purchase. Thanks again, jlm.

the low light performance of this camera is far better than the previous. the lcd screen is sepia, not neutral (and the menu settings are not creating that cast)

Ed, yes it really took a while from this part of the world plus the intricacies of getting stucked in customs. How are you finding your new M246? Any standout positives (/negatives)?

Positives: improved iso! also, i may be fooling myself on this, but the highlights seem a little better.
Negatives: i liked the feel of the original Monochrom better, lighter in the hand, etc.
Weird factor: it is weird to look through the OVF and see color then through the EVF and see B&W!

Re: Fun with the Leica M Monochrom

A couple more.... I never would have seen myself shooting street with a 50mm, but I'm actually enjoying the greater working distance. For some reason I find it more relaxing than my usual 28mm on the GR. Now, if only I can remember that I need to focus.

BTW, the new MM inspired me to start a photo-a-day (mostly) tumblr. I'm still playing around with the format, but enjoying the process very much. A few GR shots but mostly MM.
