Using RB/RZ lenses on Mamiya 645afd?

Greetings from Toronto,

In the Phase One documentation of compatible lenses for the 645 system, it notes that RB and RZ lenses are compatible. Is this true without an adapter or do they require an adapter like the Hasselblad V series?

I shoot film with my 645afd and have really enjoyed using the 80mm f.2.8 CFE on it with the fotodiox adapter, so I was wondering if the other series of lenses will work now or if they will require a future adapter?

Thanks,
Chandler

Sounds undoable. The RB and RZ lenses are bigger, so they won't mount.

Plus, they have a leaf shutter, which would have to be controlled (electronically in the case of the RZ). The 645AF cannot even control the manual leaf shutter 645 lenses...the new model and lenses are required to even get that far.

That said, if you physically adapted an RB lens, and controlled the shutter using a release cable in MLU mode, technically it might be possible...but incredibly complicated for little benefit. You'd have to remove the lens to recock it every time, for example.

Not sure where that documentation is coming from or trying to imply...doesn't make sense to me. But others probably know more than I.

I have been looking for such an adapter for some time. I would love to use some of my excellent RZ lenses on my 645 AFD. The closest I have found are the Zork adapters for MF cameras. However, they use the Pentax 67 lenses. Here is a quote from their website;

"The Zörk Pro Shift Adapters provide view camera-like perspective control in a lightweight, precise, and versatile package for medium format cameras with focal plane or leaf shutters. It may also be used on 35 mm SLRs and digital cameras that have a large prism overhang, thereby preventing the use of our Panorama Shift Adapter. Combine the ProSA with the Zörk Tilt Tube or Multi Focus System, and your medium format SLR gains the all of the crucial movements of a large format camera – rise, fall, tilt, and swing – without the weight, bulk, cost, or inconvenience of a view camera.

The ability to shift allows you to take on new photographic challenges with your medium format camera, such as table-top and product photography, while increasing versatility in portrait, landscape, and architectural photography (we also offer a 50/4 Mamiya lens conversion for most medium format, focal plane shutter cameras)."

Cambo makes an RB adapter for their Ultima 35. I use the bellows mount for a Mamiya ZD (same lens mount as 645 AFD) on my Ultima so I can get tilt and shift if I need it.

I should think that an adapter for RZ lenses to fit the 645 AFDS is possible since the mirror box of an RB/RZ67 is deeper than a 645 AFD, and if designed well, maintain infinity focus. In this case you would not use the leaf shutter of the RZ lens but instead use the focal plane shutter of the 645 AFD....and you would use the RZ lenses stopped down.

I think CI is referring to the use of a Phase One back in AFD mount on a Mamiya RZ67 thus enabling you to use RZ lenses. Phase makes an RZ adapter for using their digital backs on an RZ. I use a Leaf back and and use a Leaf RZ adapter to mount my Leaf DB on my RZ Pro.

Correct. You can use a Mamiya/Phase-One digital back on the RZ Pro IID as well as the Mamiya AFD 1/2/3 and Phase One AF/DF.

RB lenses can be used on the RZ Pro IID body.

THAT's why RZ/RB lenses are listed as compatible.

As far as I know no adapters are/were made for directly mounting RZ lenses on the Mamiya body. One good reason would be that RZ/RB lenses were designed to be focused via a bellows, which would be VERY awkward to set up externally on a 645 Body. However, by all means the 645 sized bodies can use ANY lens if you can physically hold it in place using anything from a hardware mount to a duct tape solution.

I recently used a Leica Photar microscope lens and Schneider darkroom enlarging lenses for extreme macro work; at the start of the project (to test viability) I used a cardboard tube and gaffers tape to mount them in place. http://www.captureintegration.com/category/the-techie/

As Doug points out, the focusing of a RB/RZ lens will always require a bellows or very large helicoid. The only real solution I have ever seen is the Cambo Ultima 35...which I do use...but darned heavy to cart around on location. Cambo does make a bellows with a Mamiya ZD/645 lens bayonet so that you can use either camera and all the lenses shown in the attached pdf.

Great. That is all I needed to know! I will look at the Ultima and see if it works for my needs.

Using RB/RZ lenses on Mamiya 645afd

I very informally compared the Schneider 80N against the Mamiya 80 af, but not D, and the 55-11080. The quality of the images was in the same order.

Im not sure that its fair comparing the 55-110 against the Schneider; its like comparing an MPV against a Ferrari. A Ferrari can go quick, but where do you put the kids?
