Great capture! Really feels like I'm there.

7 degrees? Were you 18 inches from the beach? (Quick mental arithmetic may be faulty...)

Tons of rain this weekend in the southeast. From Decatur, GA the first is a break in the rain, with downtown Atlanta providing some cloud illumination, and the second pretty much in the rain, though taking cover in a parking deck, overlooking a view of downtown Atlanta (which is pretty much obscured).

Thanks Graham. I do a lot of night shooting, but I don't usually incorporate residential or commercial structures, it's mostly trees and the like (usually bare). I didn't really want the home in there, my eye caught the sky and the treeline and the unique illumination that was occurring. If I'd had a longer lens, I probably would have bypassed the house completely!

    Cambo AE - Handheld Rodi 40mm f8 1/125 iso 100

This shot was taken in an area of Shanghai being demolished to make way for "Modern Shanghai" While most if not almost all of the people being displaced are old, and have lived there for anywhere from 50 - 60 years, this young couple and child, seemed so out of place.
PS. The sticks are to hang the clothes.

B&W should show the grittiness of the area.

I hope that China doesn't destroy too many Hutongs before they realize the cultural value of these places. I realize that they officially are little more than slums but from what I saw in Beijing from annual visits is that these places and their unique architecture and culture are rapidly disappearing in the name of 'progress' to be replaced by expensive housing or high rise developments.

Hi Graham, Well I think in Shanghai the demolishment of the old lane houses is slowing down - but they have cleared all the old ones +/- within about 3 miles of the river, which by "coincident" is the oldest part. Allot of these were 80 - 110 years old, many without indoor plumbing. Most of the houses were divided up during the revolution of 1949, and ones that weren't then - certainly were during the cultural revolution. Five rooms, - five families , communal kitchen in the hall.
I have been in quite a few (the people are really nice - they invite you in) I think the sad part, is that unless the Government see a redeeming commercial aspect - down they go. They do generally relocate the people in groups, but many residents are resentful, and others sad.
I - like you hope that commercialism at least slows down, and the unique architecture survives.

    Re: Technical Camera Images

I truly understand the desire to make things better overall because let's face it the Hutongs and various other dense old housing environments aren't ideal given todays expectations of sanitation and modern living. However, maybe I'm being idealistic, but I do really really hope that they keep more than just a small fragment as a snapshot of history. I'm sure that few folks would choose to live there in squalid conditions but we really do need to preserve more than just a tiny fragment of the past.

Indeed. The supposed hutongs they take the tourists to are a joke. Hardly the cultural experience of the real thing.

I've posted an image taken nearby a little later with the Sony RX1-r on the Fun with RX-1 thread. I'm finding this to be the ideal small companion camera to the Arca.

Tuesday, New Year's Eve day, was a -1.44 foot tide (a King Tide, though that usually refers to an extremely high tide). I'd been looking forward to this for over 6 months and, though the tide cooperated, the sun did not (VERY bright).

I did manage to catch some clouds to add a bit of detail to a very bright blue sky, but they were quickly gone.

Re: Technical Camera Images Between Storms

Throughout Christmas and New Year, coastal western Europe has been battered by storms of considerable ferocity, yielding little opportunity for outdoor activities apart from necessary protection of life and property. Briefly today, the dense cloud parted and winds dropped below 30 knots, coinciding with high tides that were less threatening to coastal houses than in recent days. I waded to a newly formed dune that will hopefully protect my garden in future, and took some experimental handheld images while avoiding too much salt spray. Alpa FPS, IQ180, FPS HR32, F8, hyperfocal distance, 1/100 second dialed, but file data recorded 1/45th second. Maybe more experienced FPS owner can explain apparent shutter speed discrepancy (1/3 stop settings).

Refugio de Juanar inbetween Monda and Ojén in Andalucia. Love the winter colours here!

This is shot with the Credo 60, but I got the 'feel' from the Aptus II 5 colour wise, which is a good thing….
