    Re: Technical Camera Images

    Howdy folks.

I photographed an amazing industrial location earlier this year. I stumbled upon the place after photographing the beautiful Balrath Wood. Here's an image from the great Beech in Balrath Wood and one of the images I took. It was selected for the Annual Exhibition in the Royal Hibernian Academy.

I'm sending a 9ft acrylic of this piece (along with 3 others) to Pasadena. Looks really nice in acrylic

You can see more of the images here and read a bit more about it on my blog. There are 8 images there and optimised for
    retina displays.

All photos were taken with a Hasselblad H3D 39 on an Arca Swiss RL3Di. The portrait format Black and white shot on the blog had from memory about 30mm of rise!!! The pipework was practically above my head. I printed it on Hahnemόhle Fine art pearl mounted on dibond with black tray frames and it looks solo nice. Several of the colour shots were mounted on acrylic and the colours pop of the page.

First image with my new STC, no LCC or corrections applied, I like the vignette. However, it does seem like stitching in Photoshop created some distortion.

I must include a 100% crop to show what a calibrated SK 35 XL can do an a 60mp back!
What's impressive is that it is wide open at f5.6 and 7 metres distance (no sharpening)
Does not matter if I choose the mast/lines on the left or right or middle, they are all the same...

    Re: Technical Camera Images

    Merry Christmas!

Here's my first image using my new H4D-50 mounted to my Linhof Techno, SK47XL f/11 8mm shift. It's a snapshot outside where I spend my Christmas holliday.

Won't be much shooting as the Silvestri battery I got is dysfunctional, only holds power for 10 minutes or so, need a replacement. The Hasselblad back worked fine in the -20C today though.

As I contribute and use open source raw software as well as produce own commercial software I'll try to figure out the 3FR calibration data format while waiting for the new battery. I've asked Hasselblad for the spec, but camera manufacturers rarely help in making their formats open, so I guess I'm up for yet another reverse-engineering challenge. Today one needs to convert to FFF in Phocus to get good results in the smaller third-party softwares (which usually is dcraw-based), but with calibration data format reverse-engineered using 3FR directly will work.

The attached image was processed in RawTherapee, using Phocus to get FFF files first. Phocus makes great results too of course, they've really managed to maximize what you can get from this 50 megapixel sensor, but I'm loyal to "my" raw converter (and it feels like home) so I'll do my best to make as good results there.

Thanks Graham, I'd like to take credit for this (staying up late, arranging for a full moon, etc) however the result is a result of a mistake during processing; a slip of the finger that when I saw what had happened both the image and I agreed was good. Yes, I often talk to my images listening to them letting me know where they want to go.

    Re: Technical Camera Images

Not the greatest image I ever posted but you should have seen me getting it!

Seldom do I rush into anything, no, I'm pretty slow and thoughtful about the whole process of capturing images. This image gives me a little smile thinking about it. I saw it from the road, around 100 metres away, uphill. The sun was descending rapidly behind a mountain range and the shadows moving quickly across the fields as the sun became smaller and smaller.
I decided to run for it!! A look in the rear mirror and nobody behind, full breaks and parked as safely as I could. Grabbed the folded tripod and the camera bag. Started to run like I was chased by a predator. Extending the tripodlegs inflight and hearing my breath increasing. Seeing the shadows moving fast I almost realised that this rush is for nothing, but I did continue at full speed ahead.
Reaching the spot where I thought was good I slammed down the tripod, ripped open the camerabag lid and at the same time as grabbing the cam, I pushed the on button. Connected it to the tripodhead, cocked the shutter and pushed the soft release.
I'm not kidding when I say that 1,5 seconds later the scene was gone. By the time the Aptus processed the captured image and put it on the display, the trunk, the stones around it and the whole green field in the foreground was in dull shadow.
I did not level the cam, I had no idea what exposure time, what f stop or where the focus was set! Catching my breath after the rush, I realised I was lucky with the settings, infinity focus, 1/15 and f5.6, and guess what - I have not levelled the image in post, it was deadlevel by luck.
It is perfectly true that if I had time, then I would never compose this image with the lower branches interfering with the distant mountain range, they would be above the ridge with air, but hey, under the circumstances not too shabby....

    Thanks Darr

Somehow, when an image may not be the greatest it can still give you some satisfaction or atleast put a smile on your face, remembering how it came about!

Colours by big pixel back, straight out of the box! So natural and lifelike without any tweaking at all...
