Apparently, Leaf backs are submersible.

Today, in Yosemite, as I was venturing into the Merced for a more interesting composition, a leg of my tripod bumped a rock, and my Aptus-II 12 popped right off and fell into the water. Really. I am not joking when I say it was fully submerged.

I felt so appallingly stupid.

I dried it out by setting it on a heater blowing on "high" for about eight hours, cleaned the sensor and glass thoroughly, and, thank god, it seems to be working fine. Fortunately, the Merced is fresh water. To say that this was one of the worst days of my life, however, would not be an understatement.

Blimey.. I had to fish out my Linhof Technika from 3m of dirty water at the lake last October.. and i remember how it felt.. And i remember saying myself "if it were not mechanical - i'd give up right away b/c there is no way it would survive". And here - miracle story of digital survival.. Good for you!

Wow I know Yair would love to hear this as a Leaf rep. But I would send it in and have it checked out. My worry is corrosion could start . So they may want to clean the electronics off.

I will say very very lucky . Go buy some lottery tickets. LOL

Gabe,

I would still get the back checked by Leaf. Problems can appear later.

However, still lucking you.

Best regards
Thierry

Probably the last thing on your mind, but a P&S camera would have been an awesome record of photos. Seeing "real world" Leaf-tough is pretty effective marketing.... I can imagine the stunned look of horror and hearing the sickening "plop" in the water.... hope the rest of your trip was good and much more uneventful!

Gabe next time you go out let us know and we'll send a film crew along:)

Having accidentally thrown an Aptus across a studio and seeing it jumping and rolling on the concrete floor and then putting it back on the RZ and shooing as if nothing happened I know these buggers are tough. I also know what it feels like when you pick it up after the incident...

On a serious note I would suggest sending it to MAC for a service check as there could always be some damage to circuit boards etc. and if you're insured then it would help your peace of mind

I am not convinced that Leaf backs are submersible. Perhaps you can try it again just to be sure...

Two things: in the future, rinse (perhaps) in alcohol to take the residue off....

and

glad this happened, so that we know the limits now!

Guy.. Can you try with your P1 IQ? Mine is not available :)
LOL mine is glued on the Cambo. LOL

Actually folks a word of caution and a just in case thing. I put a piece of gaffers tape on my backs release button. Every once in awhile I notice it slid back to release position. I know its ugly but its better than balling your eyes out when murphy's law plays games on you. :cussing:

My prior Leaf dropped onto hard wood floor and bounced and rolled like a ball. Nonetheless it worked flawless thereafter!

No, no no... that was NOT why I upgraded. However I can praise the Leaf external battery that acted as a crash cushion. That battery though looked kaputt and went into trash...

Sorry my AFi-II 12 is not available for any testing.

Love my Leaf

Best regards,
Anders

P.S. Any real life action experience of P1 backs, in particular the IQs??? Or is it limited to the "staged" videos from P1 only???

Guy, Jack, how about dropping or throwing your IQ backs for us??? :)

Hmm, I have practical experience of Mr Murphy and expensive digital equipment! I'll spare the delicate feelings of my fellow digital back owners and not post the picture of my Aptus 65M after it's argument with my Alpa. :facesmack:

Ok, I changed my mind. Be careful out there folks otherwise you'll suffer this kind of sight! (and yes it did get fixed, mostly at least)
