Phase One Promotes Photographers’ Independence with New, Affordable Leasing Options

COPENHAGEN, July 1, 2013 -- Phase One, the world’s leader in open-platform, high-end camera systems and solutions, today launched a new pay-for-use camera leasing program in the United States and Canada. For an affordable monthly fee (as low as $379), this program offers photographers the opportunity to enjoy the ultimate in digital camera power, performance and precision.

Starting today photographers can lease their choice of a new Phase One P40+, P65+, IQ140, IQ160, IQ180, IQ260, or IQ280 camera system with value added service for 36 months and save as much as 34 percent over a standard lease agreement. At the close of the lease, gear will be returned to the dealer, and at that time, customers are eligible for a new lease that offers access to the latest available equipment.

For example, a P40+ digital back only with value added service and a list price of $16,990 is available now for only $379 per month. And an IQ260 value-added camera system capable of one-hour exposures and wireless support with 80mm Schneider Kreuznach Leaf shutter lens and a purchase price of $43,990 is available now for $969 per month.

Current Phase One customers wishing to upgrade to a new system will receive cash payments for their gear when they sign up for this new lease. They will enjoy all the advantages of pay-for-use -- namely, more affordable payments and access to the latest technology. This program is made possible through an agreement between Phase One and FotoFunding and Equicapital in the United States, and with Equilease in Canada.

Pricing and availability
The new camera leasing program is available now for the lease of either a digital back only or a complete Phase One camera system, including a digital back and value added service, for a period of three years. For more information, including specific pricing for various models in the U.S. and Canada, please see your local U.S. or Canadian Phase One dealer for details: Phase One partner locator

Does leasing a back at full retail price (!) and not owning it at the end make any sense? Seems like a really bad value proposition to me, in addition you stay hooked to P1 ...

The financial calculations involved in determining the lease vs. buy choice are complicated.

The lessor (here, Phase) does them, and the lessee (us) often doesn't. That's why people (at least here in the U.S.) pay so much to lease cars.

But in cars you can buy out to a residual value. Here it seems your renting at full boat, not a rate for let's say a BMW at a cost of 50k to buy but to lease your only renting on a 25k value and a 3 year end of lease with a residual value of 25k. Your only renting 25k per say. Maybe this is figured in somehow but I have not read any fine print yet either. For big studios this may make sense. Something worth looking into on a personal level if it makes sense. You can also get a business loan as well and own it after three years. This is a sit down with pen and paper with your accountant and see what makes the most financial sense. This also takes knowing the tax laws which many of us do not know ourselves.

For some folks that are just looking at a low monthly payment it can make sense.

If a photographer has been renting a digital system, IQ160-Kit for example a minimum of one or two days a month at an average rental rate for about $800/day in NYC, then a monthly lease payment of about $839 with this new program could make sense to them.

A normal lease where you have a buyout at the end will end up costing about 34% more per month and then have the buyout at the end.

You can still purchase a system or lease it with a buyout, but Phase One and their partners are just trying to make it more affordable for photographers to use Phase One Medium Format systems.

Also by the way all systems leased this way have the Value Added Warranty so you are covered with a loaner back for the full term.

We have a online leasing calculator on our site for both the PhaseOne Lease Program and Our Normal Leasing along with additional information .

I can certainly see it that way as well Lance.if your putting out rental fees on a constant basis a lease may make more sense plus its in your hands 24/7 as well.

It also helps those that can't just borrow 50k or put up 50 k initially. Totally get that one myself, its a option.

Well, if one could open a rental business that way .... would that be possible, or do some clauses in P1's terms preclude that?

Paying 800 USD to P1 per month and renting out the back 5 times per month for 400 USD ...

There is nothing to preclude that.
How many would you like Paul?
:)

BTW the lease is handled by a third-party company.
