I guess making fun of Japanese pronunciation isn't racist here in the Medium Format world. Maybe we need some definition of terms so that those of us who are too sensitive won't misjudge other posters.

People have been making fun of dialects, accents, seemingly weird expressions etc. for centuries. The Pink Panther movies were based on it, likewise the highly successful 'Allo 'Allo TV series. Do I need to mention Monty Python's Flying Circus or Faulty Towers? I can't count the number of times I've been to comedy shows in this country where, as soon as some comedian discovers that there's a "farang" among the audience, there are 20 minutes with jokes about farangs, our white skin, inability to speak Thai properly and not eat Pla Ra. Then he'll be turning to the dialect from Supan, a province where the farmers are known to speak slowly, and using the "wrong" tones.

In my experience, this goes on all over Asia, and when it comes to other Asians, the jokes tend to go further. As westerners, we can of course sit high on our horses and claim that we are so "civilized" that we don't make jokes about others, but we do. It's just not comes il faut in some circles.

Why do you call them failings? The world is full of tiny imperfections. Some of them look or sound funny, some don't. There are of course certain things and certain groups of people that one cannot make jokes about, and I avoid those at any price. Now, I've learned that I shouldn't make jokes on this forum, so I won't :angel:

I think we all like the idea of special editions even if they are not to our taste (love the silver H but not the Ferrari H) but sadly they don't get used the way they should and sometimes remain little more than a trophy. I am pleased to say that some of the special editions do get well used like this one that I have just finished servicing for one of my clients.

The stainless steel H4D actually looks very cool, and much better than the drab gray original H Series. I wouldn't mind having and using one at all. Unfortunately, it's way beyond my budget. Is it possible to change leather on a 500 Series, making one's own Special Edition so to say?

Yes, I was hoping that my half-joking post re the Ricoh GR Limited for the bargain price of $100 more would get this thread back on topic....ie "What the heck are those crazy people running Hasselblad smoking?!?!?" :loco:

I makes me long for the good old days of real Hasselblad Limited Editions....a Ferrari Red or Stainless H4D, a gorgeous blue and silver 503CW with matching Zeiss "Classic" lens, etc.

At least these were REAL HASSELBLADS! :thumbs:

The funny part is that the real Hasselblad collectible isn't any of the above. It's a 203 FE with the 110mm f/2.0. That combo will set you back the best part of $5,000 second hand, and that's just the basic version with WLF and no gadgets. Still that is not the camera/lens Hasselblad chose to build their future on

Daaaaamn, how did I not know about all this hotness? Only makes me sad that I won't see digital versions of these, sorry but you couldn't make me use film anymore. Hasslebad, get your act together and make a 6x6 back for these, that's your Lunar right there.

If they didn't make it too expensive either, by perhaps using an up-scaled CMOS sensor, it could do the following things:
1. Actually tap into real Hasselblad history. and rose-tinted glasses.
2. Offer people an inexpensive way to start a system with existing cameras and lenses.
3. People would actually want to buy it.
4. 6x6
5. Strengthen brand recognition.

Of course yes! You will notice in the background of the picture of the Blue Hasselblad is my own wooden 500C, the Swedes called it the 'Old Horse', don't ask me why. Covering Hasselblads in wood is something I started years ago, and I didn't need an Italian designer to tell me how to do it, in fact he asked me to show it to him when I met him some years ago so perhaps what happened next is all my fault.

Would it kill the market for the newer back? Possibly, but how many are they selling when the price for that back alone approaches what one has to pay for a new Leica S...

I know about the CFV backs, but they are ancient and overpriced as you say. CCD has got to go.

People always say how MF camera makers have less room for R&D because of the low sales/high margin model, but there's also no reason for them to expand into the market of cheaper and smaller cameras too. Think the big three (Canikony) have that market cornered? The A7r would like to have a word with you.

In what seemed like an already crowded market, Sony came and made an affordable 35mm mirrorless camera, which is honestly a franken-camera made from off-the-shelf parts that even a small-ish company like Phase One could've hacked together.

And there is still a niche that hasn't been explored yet, one that I like joking about, but also desperately want to see - a medium format mirrorless compact. A complete, integrated camera system with electronic veiwfinder, and at least a 645 frame. It should also be small and light, so that one might consider taking it instead of their DLSR kit. Think Cambo minus movements, and the sensor/electronics are in the body, instead of hanging off the back, and you can compose through the lens as you shoot like with a DSLR. Nirvana yet? Of course not, the camera should be at least $8000 or less, for a 40, maybe 50mp sensor version.

That camera is exactly what I was expecting at Photokina 2012 (Certainly not the Lunar). Had they brought out that and introduced a rebadged camera at a reasonable price (a la Leica), it might have been a little more palatable to Hasselblad devotees. I already had my speech prepared to give my wife to justify buying a new camera. But after the Lunar was announced, she talked me into a new Leica M. I'll have to admit, she didn't have to talk very hard.

That Ricoh is actually a good example of a proper "limited" series modification and it sells for what it's really worth: $100 more than the standard edition, including extras. The contrast to the feeble Hasselblad attempts is breathtaking. And no, it doesn't help that David Beckham has one/bought one/was give one or whatever. You may think it is fine to make fun of other ethnics based on their own humors but it does not necessary provide you the vehicle to use it and made fun of them. Again, the more you write the more it shows your character. I am not sure if I can laugh at your own profiling act.

Of course not! it's common knowledge that a normal person + anonymity + audience = total diсkwad.

I also suppose it depends on cultural concepts of "humor", for instance I have no problem using passive racial slurs in conversation, because it's normal here. Snide remarks, dry wit, sarcasm and national, racial or ethnic jokes comprise the majority of jokes and humor in Russia, and no one will bat an eye if you use them (in proper context).

In Japan, it's very different, they don't have sarcasm and will take what you say literally, unless they are prepared for western style humor beforehand. I can only imagine the variety of do's and don'ts that exist out there in the world.

On the internet we have a bit of a problem, since it's not always easy to only use universally accepted language, seeing as every other person could be from a completely different country. So rather than trying to be politically correct and attempting to not upset anyone (it will never work), you should simply ignore what others say, and not even waste time replying.

I'm not justifying for people to be аssholes on the internet, but it's proven psychology that as long as someone's merely reading text, they often won't truly, genuinely sympathize with the person they're talking to, unless they already know each other personally.

I like to think we can move toward a more civilized relationship in the way we can respect one another, despite of our differences, and find humor in other ways that does not jeopardize putting down any group of people like we have done in the past. History has shown and in many cases have not been brought to light the brutality of how one group of people treat another group. Based on such culturally deep routed humor, I ask that we could move forward to new and better way of treating each other. Our world is now a more global and not isolated community.

I beg the different to your grouping of all internet places are the same way. Despite the medium of the GetDPI forum is internet based, however, it is unlike most online places where it is considered as a community where photographic knowledges are shared and the camaraderie are made and people do seem to care about one another despite having never met before and eventually met in some cases through workshops. I give acknowledgement to the leaders of this forums. Though I do not rule out as you pointed out that there are people who treat all internet places are the same.

I think your comment is way off base - We are talking about cameras and the fact that some products are made with certain markets in mind. Certain markets = certain demographics.

I find your comment not only insulting but quite frankly trite, belittling, not at germane to the conversation, and showing a complete lack of knowledge of what you speak.

Excuse my reaction, as a son of a survivor of the concentration camps, lost (killed) over 150 family members, - yes I take words seriously.

I was not born yesterday to not recognizing the fact that different demographics may have different NEEDS of product line. However, where we differed is that I believe the product lines are tailor made based on regional resources availability and economic status. Let me further explain to clarify what I am trying to tell you so that you will not belittle me about my ability to speak with you in the same class of your "superior" knowledge. For example, gasoline is the limiting factor that has to be taken into account for certain region of the world. In the US, gasoline is more readily available so when the economy was good, you see more huge SUV on the street. As the gasoline prices went up and coupled with a bad economy, SUV declines and hybrid cars increases. Based on this fact of product line changed does it mean that the US just changed its ethnicity? You on the other hand LABELED as the "Asian" will buy such product lines. Furthermore, I am not even cleared as to what you meant by "Asian?" Is it the Chinese? The Japanese? The Indian? Perhaps you will also group the Asian from South and North America and in other continents who may be natives to those continents to have the same taste as well?

I really don't believe that your inherit background gets you a free pass on such complicated issue. Everyone is responsible for their own action. Irony exists in many facets of life and it often comes when you forget you are not walking in another man shoe.

Wrong. My user name is my real name and tells you who I am an a little bit about my cultural background. My location tells you where I live and adds to the knowledge about my life experience. Your user name could as well have been "XYZABC" or "Microwave oven". Neither of those, nor your user name, say anything whatsoever about who you are, what your background is or what your cultural knowledge is.

I have made it to a rule for myself not to have discussions with people that I don't know the identity of. This forum has until now been the exception. That is now up for revision.
