Need to punch out the Art Director for type placement … God, I hate tangents.

A house I photographed for an Architect a few weeks ago. No production and no additional lights, just what was there. All are single image captures. I was basically at the limit of the dynamic range of the sensor. I used every single bit of what was available.

A job I just did for the local bank's yearly report...

H4D-40 and 28mm for the middle page shot and 50-110 (@70mm) for the cover shot Litt with a mix of profoto lighting and reflected daylight with big sunbouncers...
I have cropped out the dead space eft for copy/titles in the shots, but you can see it in the finished report...

And the report...

Very nice work and an interesting edit...almost has a HD feel to it I think because of the 'open-ness' or illumination. Without giving away any secrets, care to elaborate on the processing?

Hi & thanks :)

Mostly done in lightroom with an increase in midtone contrast and use of the clarity slider,I also lifted the shadows some...

I then opened the rawfile into photoshop where I added more midtone contrast using Nik color efex pro, I dont use plugins alot and rarely straight, but the "tonal contrast" filter is very nice if you tune it to your tastes.. I then colorised the image with some yellow but faded it back a good deal... then a little tweak to the curves and a final sharpening. That's it, as they say :)

This is what the file looked like on export from Lightroom:
A "straight" version (although with more midtone contrast then the straight lightroom export) and the warmer version were delivered, the customer chose the warmer version... I feel it works well on the printed page too... :)

Thanks for taking the time to explain your process. I don't personally do a lot of post production so I'm always fascinated with what can be done. Forgot to compliment you earlier on how well you handled this large group of people (presumably non professionals?). I know it's not easy and it's one of the reasons that I shoot hamburgers!

Nathan, I think being a bank's yearly report the idea and the fact that they agreed, is very open minded and progressive. Congrats!

Thanks Foodshooter and Antonio :)

Always a challenge with groups, and yes these were bank staff, and the two on the sofa are customers of the bank.... They (the bank) have made it a tradition to use local people in the annual report each year, something that is quite popular :)

I was given the brief and slogan "Active customer service" as in the bank are there for their customers, helping every day so that you can get on with your life.. obviously its figurative, the bank arn't litterally offering to clean your house and make you coffee :D and after a half an hour of brainstorming with the banks contactperson we ended up with this concept.. obviously its figurative, the bank arn't litterally offering to clean your house and make you coffee! I love it when customers go with my ideas, always more rewarding to be a part of the whole process and not just be the hired gun :)

I do very little food work, I consider it a specialist area, but living where I live ypu have to be flexible... I have great respect for real food shooters, its a lot more demanding than alot of people realise! I think a plate offood can be just as quarrelsome as a big group of people :)
