Nikon 14-24 on MFDB

So I got bored waiting for someone else to get around to doing this, so thought I'd investigate it myself.

Lens shade fully shaved off.

My main interest here was to see whether I could get a wider FoV with this lens on the IQ250 compared to the Canon 17 TS-E.

IIRC, 14mm on an IQ250 should be very close to the FoV that 17mm on the IQ180 provides. Unfortunately, even if you're considering using this lens for a use-case where you're going to be cropping down to a 16:9 frame, it can't do it***.

All images without any lens correction applied.

On the IQ250 and Alpa FPS

As you can see, the answer is no - the Nikon is still vignetting all the way up to 17mm, at which point (IMO) the Canon is by far the better choice since it has a much larger image circle.

Kinda tough to come up with a reason for using this lens!

I should clarify - you can't get a full sensor width 16:9 frame out of this at 14mm. You can just get one at 15mm though, so possibly there is an extreme niche use-case scenario there!

By way of comparison, here's the Canon 17TSE



(seems to be closer to 18mm on the Nikon actually).

One thing I forgot to mention is that once you get to the periphery of the image circle on the Nikon, the chromatic aberation is extremely bad.
 
It will certainly be very interesting to see where the 11-24 starts to cover the IQ250 sensor.

= 14mm

Assuming that the 11-24 can cover the IQ250 at 14mm (and hence giving 11mm equivalence), which one would be able to give better corner sharpness (I mean, effective amount of details / resolution in the extreme corners)?

a) 50MP IQ250 (44*33mm) + 11-24 @ 14mm (11mm equivalence)
b) 50MP 5Ds (36*24mm) + 11-24 @ 11mm (11mm equivalence)
c) 80MP IQ180 (54*40mm) + TSE17 @ 17mm (11mm equivalence)

Well there's no getting away from the fact that the 11-24 will be designed to perform at its optimum on a 36x24 sensor. I'm guessing that maybe thinking about using it on the IQ250 is purely an intellectual exercise with no material benefit.

I fully expect the lens, in combination with a c50mp sensor, to be a game-changer.

Hi Gerald

The maximum movement of the 14-24mm is at 20mm focal length.
You have to cut further down beyond the sunshade´s butterfly wings.
to get the full result at 20mm you need to go about 3-4mm lower than the
golden washer ring that appears when you cut this all another 5-6mm.
And this can only be done when the lens is dis- and reassembled by a Nikon Repair shop.
