Lens front element thread

strok

Member
Hi guys, I have a situation where I'm not sure if this is my fault due to a lack of knowledge or this is a defective product.
I have a lens with 105mm front element. I have two filters from heliopan which are perfect fit for the lens front element.
Yesterday I've received an adapter 105mm to 122mm which was purchased on ebay. The thread won't mount on my lens or any of two filters. Do you know if there's only one (standard) thread? Or multiple thread options?
Thanks

There is a thread that mentions this topic 3 pages back called "Filters for the 105mm thread". Don Libby says there is a 1.00mm threaded filter which works, the ring actually spun on, something the .75mm threaded filter failed to do.

The forum is always quiet on Saturdays.

As said above, the thread size is different at 105mm. It may be the same diameter, but the "fineness" of the thread is courser.

99.5% of lenses used on DSLRs will have a standard 0.75mm pitch and any filter of the right diameter will fit. All Hoya filters from 43mm to 95mm have 0.75mm thread pitch.

If no 'c' is stated, then a filter, or collapsible rubber hood, should always mechanically fit on a lens.

Beware with larger sizes. Some lenses will state for example an '86c' where others can state an ordinary 86. The 'c' stands for coarse. In the larger filter sizes (86 and above) there are two thread pitches. Listings for 86mm include 86C, 86M and 86. 86 and 86M (M stands for medium thread) have a standard 0.75mm pitch.

Tiffen lists c and m for 86mm and above, which are 1.0 and 0.75mm thread pitch.

Here's an example:
http://www.amazon.com/Hoya-86mm-Circular-Polarizer-Filter/dp/B0000AIS4J

Putting an ordinary 0.75mm pitch threaded filter on a lens with coarse thread will go on a turn or two and then bind. Also as it binds it may bow the glass slightly. Then it could damage either your filter thread, or the lens thread, or both.

Just to add to Steve's great info, as this type of information is hard to find.

The CF for the 28mm Rodenstock is outside threaded to 95mm, and these are coarse threads, as are the 105mm threads on the CF for the 32mm Rodenstock.

I have used the following CL-PL filters on both of these CF's,

Lee 105mm (new filter, a bit warm, but excellent glass and very very thin)
Heliopan 105mm, Huge filter by far the thickest piece of glass/frame I have ever seen
B+W 105mm is in between the Lee and Heliopan

All of these 105mm CL-PL filters will fit with ease on the Coarse threads of the Rodenstock 95mm and 105mm openings on their Center filters. I believe it's safe to assume that the outer threads on the 35mm LS and 40-80mm LS Schneiders are coarse threaded. So any of the filters I listed should work without binding. Note, I used the Heliopan 95mm to 105mm step up ring on the CF for the 28MM HR to get to the 105mm opening. Still no issues.

Currently I know of no ND filters in the 105mm size that are SHIPPING and are of a good quality glass. HiTech has listed their Firecrest in 105mm for over a year and I have had 2 on order that long. Last I heard they will ship sometime in late 2015 or Jan 2016. I am not holding my breath. However I will assume these filters will come with coarse threading. BTw, the firecrest glass is AMAZING. No tints at all and they do have an IR coating. By far the best ND I have used in 25 years of usage. The Hitech is shipping these filters in the the large SW-150 size for Lee and the 100 x 100 also that fit the Lee holders.

Lastly, by far the best news, Lee is going to make a 86mm, 95mm and 105mm Ring to allow you to use the SW-150 holder on lenses with these larger openings!!!!!!!!!!!!. This was officially announced at the NY Photoexpo show by LEE. Now when they will start to ship anyone's guess. However I am assuming that they will be some form of a wide angle design. The SW-150 mounts totally differently than how the 100 x 100 Lee holder mounts, as the inside has a smooth round opening, which the ring fits into. You then screw down a pinch screw that holds the adapter into place. Lee also is using a much improved Light shield on the SW-150, and this will retro fit to the older SW-150's if you have one. I have all three of these rings on order from the filterconnection, www.2filter.com but still have not heard when they will ship.

Note, due to the weight of the massive front element of the 32mm Rodie, adding a 2 filter SW-150 might not be a great idea, but in theory if Hitech gets off their A** and finally starts to ship the 105mm Firecrest, you have that option. The Lee SW-150 should be a perfect fit for a 35mm LS or 40-80LS as you ain't going to hurt those massive pieces of glass with a SW-150. I believe that the 28mm HR with a CF (a must for that lens) will work great with the SW-150 and 2 filters. But you can also just take the 95mm to 105mm Helipan step rings and use the HiTech firecrest if they ever ship.

Just wanted to pass this on.

Paul, have you tried the Heliopan slim ND? Comes in 105mm. I have a few of them and they work quite well on the 32HR, at least for me....but I am not a big ND user to begin with. I also have the CPL from them and it is great.

Hi Jagsiva:

No I looked at them for a while, but B&H only had them as special order, if they are like this:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/828873-REG/Heliopan_710583_105mm_Neutral_Density_ND.html

It's hard to tell if this is thin or not. Where did you get yours from?

I might have to go back to them if Hitech screws around and doesn't make theirs. The Hitech glass, is simply beautiful. The IR coating on the front is nice added feature and they are slim, (real slim right now as you can't get them anywhere).

I mainly use a CL-PL to cut glare, but they can make a huge difference on really bright day, with just green leaves. And in the fall, can be invaluable cloudy or sunny.

Thanks for the info on Heliopan.

Thank you Steve
Based on your second reply the 40-80LS most likely has the 0.75mm thread.
But your first reply has a reference to another forum-post which makes it all confusing.
Don Libby bought both adapter rings 1.0 and 0.75mm.
He says that the only one which is working is 1.0, but his images showing 0.75 being mounted.
So I'm still confused, and the ring I got doesn't have the thread size marked on it.
Cheers

The 40-80 is 1.0 pitch. Don tried the .75 Cokin ring and it bound up. He then ordered the 1.0. It worked fine. It's safe to assume the 35LS has the same pitch 1.0. I also have the 1.0 cokin ring, and it fits fine on the Rodenstock CF's which are also coarse threaded.

Just took a macro shot side by side of ND-big stopper (fits ok) and the adapter ring which doesn't.
The ND- big stopper has smaller thread.

Paul,

will check for the exact model numbers on mine. I have about 6 of them. I got them at Teamworkphoto.com (uk based), as the prices were stupid cheaper than BH on these filters.

Here's a sample with CF + ND on the 32HR. I have several others with and without and CPL/CF etc. let me know if you want to see them.

After LCC....with a 15mm +/- shift in landscape, it has a slight bit of hard vignetting.
