well done! The light on the morning of the 4th in the valley here was great (overcast).. you can see that in your images

Thanks Jim - yes the overcast held all morning and made for some great shooting

BTW the whole gallery can be found here: Zenfolio | Joseph Hakim | BC 4th of July 2012

Lake Johnson Remarkables Queenstown, maybe 45 minutes walk from where I live, looking South or S.E. I'm going back to get more along lake looking more to left, East, so from different angle. I could have last night, of moon rising but never been to where I wanted to go during day, and plenty of frost ?ice? sloping ground, no torch...

Took these at most shutter speeds and 1600 3200 and 6400. The 3200 or 6400 are the better pictures.
AF20mm 2.8D, mirror up, ISO 6400, F2.8 10 seconds. Resized only, no adjustments... I really need a better lens... The stars are close to being dots. The streakiness of stars are ?aberations? of whatever type...

    ISO 6400 8 seconds

Thanks, good to know, I'm not overly educated yet... Its easier to get pictures like these than at day with great lighting, at the same place...

Thank you lloyds. I should admit that I have a great subject muse in my wife. She is the competitor second from the right (#17). She has been competing for the past 3 years and really got me into photographing bodybuilding and figure competitors.

She looks great. Good you do it together. I don't know how only one person in a marriage could do it without the support of the other. How'd she do in this competition?

She won her height class (tall), masters over 35, and the overall. We are at the Team USA Chapmionships in Teaneck, NJ this weekend where the top competitors can win their pro cards to compete in the IFBB competitions.

Got my D800e replacement for my defective D800e and have been getting to know the camera for a couple of days. This one taken of the Snake River, Colorado using my 35mm 1.4G lens, just a few minutes ago. I'm really enjoying this camera! Eleanor

Most lenses will not give pin-point stars wide open. A point light source is the best thing to show limitations of a lens. Stopping down two stops or more will tighten up those stars. To stop them from trailing, you will need a shorter exposure or a tracking mount. Tracking will make the ground blur. Welcome to the wonderful fun you can have shooting stars from a rotating platform.

    nice images eleanor!

i too have the same camera/lens combo. imho, a great combo! i hope you enjoy yours as much as i enjoy mine. in addition, i feel a sense of freedom being able to go out with a small kit (compared to lugging around my tech cameras and hassy equipment) while still able to create high/gallery quality images.

Agree, the sense of freedom is really wonderful. My phase one equipment is very heavy and bulky. I'm really enjoying live view shooting on the Nikon too! Eleanor

Thanks for the information and reply. At the moment I'm relieved I've got this camera, and love the live view virtual horizon... I'm 3 or 4 hours drive from Lake Tekapo which has been made a "gold level night sky reserve", almost free of light pollution, and must visit soon...
