Here's my contribution to the banding effect. Raw to tiff. This is really annoying and not easy to edit. These conditions can really trick a lightmeter. I see banding in many photos, often with gradients in big skies regardless of jpg compression or RAW.

John, have you checked the histogram in the RAW file, is the capture by any chance overexposed ?
Under circumstances like that I'd always check the histogram on location after such a capture.
Or have you added some heavy vignetting ?

In my opinion it is not possible to judge anything but composition in a 1200 pixel wide jpeg file.
Only the RAW file can illustrate the capture itself and its inherent strengths or weaknesses.

In the above, previous stitched example one of the RAW files was clearly overexposed, easily seen already in the histogram.
And the concentric tonal bands were visible right from the beginning in that specific (fifth) RAW file out of the five exposure bracketed files.

    Re: Fun with Nikon Images

    Hi Steen,
For that location I did expose for highlights and looked at the histogram, nothing to indicate the banding. No vignetting for that one, but for some photos that's a useful tool to mask the effect. Even pulling a little magenta helps too.

Wow...so many beautiful images here. Where to begin? Ok, "Hands on Hips" is a good place to start. Fantastic image Will. :-)

I shouldn't bother even posting this one....sort of ruins the mood.

    Re: Fun with Nikon Images

    Morning!

Something completely different, last night I took some photographs at an annual event here in Sweden that I'd never heard of before, Lucia.

Girls compete to be crowned Lucia and lead a procession by candlelight through the town on the 13th December.

I went along to take some shots of the girls, obviously a little tricky by candlelight but came out ok in the end.

I took most shots with the 200 f2 wide open, I'm really growing to like this lens a lot!

After the formal shots were done we had a bit of fun, great to take the girls acting more natural!

And my favourite, I managed to find a fire extinguisher and this was the result! The girls were really cool.

John, is the tonal banding effect visibly present already in the RAW file, or does it only show up during post processing ?

How about making the RAW file downloadable for us so that we can take a closer look at it ?

    Evening!

Great light down at the river this morning, the sky ranged from a deep grey to bright orange and pink, it felt like the actual air was coloured!

Anyway, grabbed a quick shot and captured the last cygnet on the river practicing his take-off and landing on the few remaining bits of open water.

BSEH - Your pictures inspired me to find a couple of old pictures from the region: December 1982, Nikon F3, I believe, probably a 105 mm, from Tengboche first, and a 35 mm PC, from Lobuje, second.

    Re: Fun with Nikon Images

I flew in and out of Lukla - it was still a dirt landing strip then. The day before I left, it snowed, and all the tourists cleared the runway with planks of wood or whatever they could find, as no planes were likely to show up if the runway was covered in snow! It was a long trip, and I had already walked around Annapurna, including the sanctuary. I walked into Namche on Christmas Eve, in a light snow, and it was a Friday, so the Bazaar was the next day!

The second picture was actually from Kala Pattar, not Lobuje/Lobuche. Another picture from Kala Pattar, looking roughly South-East, at Ama Dablam (it had snowed the day before):
