Video Aliasing with Nikon D800/D800E

Interesting accessory.

It will be impossible to have something removable like that for the D800E though.

The F mount and the mirror housing will not allow that as in the EOS cams.

It is not the physical size, Lars but the distance between the lens rear (especially the aperture prong from the lens in the non E lenses and the lever from the camera) and the mirror/aperture lever would preclude that in an F mount camera.

Canon did away with that problem a long time ago when they introduced the EOS mount.

Right, it is much bigger in diameter than any other "35" reflex camera. It was the main raison d'être of the EF EOS lens mount.

I wonder if this is going to be an even greater issue than with the Canon 5D Mark II. There is an interesting removable antialiasing filter available for the Canon. Do you think such an attachment would make sense for stills with the D800E, turning it essentially into a D800?

Nope.

This will not work for stills in the D800 because the anti aliasing is for vertical line skipping and based on the resolution of video. Also it can only be used in live mode with live mode focusing because it shifts focus and can only be used with mirror up.

No, this attachment is not intended for stills. It blurs so much it would turn your D800E into a first generation iPhone or something like that ;-)

When recording video, there is no difference in moiré between the Nikon D800 and D800E, because the video moiré is caused by downsampling and not by the (lack of an) anti-alias filter. All DSLR cameras suffer from moire with video recording, because the sensor image is downsampled to video resolution.

Have a look at How do I get rid of aliasing and moiré artifacts in video on the Nikon D800/D800E? for more info.
