And the rest was silence ... ?

5 months without a single comment, maybe about time the D610 (and D600) gets a bit of attention :)

Half a year ago a burglar stole My D800E so now I have finally bought Nikon's more modest entrance ticket to the FX format, the D610, to keep me afloat until the next new unequalled FX wonder shows up.

Let's take a look at some initial test files.

If you want to process the RAW file to your own taste you can download it here (28 Mb), but please keep any posted result here on the GetDPI Forum.

Yes, I think I already like it, Peter.
A lot, actually :)

But there are also some drawbacks like no AF-ON button, and - even more scandalous - no option to program the center OK button to zoom-in to a preset magnification on playback - I mean, it's just a program line in the firmware.
In other words nothing but the same old stupid camera-crippling strategy

This first one is backlit and has very deep shadows, but they loosen up nicely with some D-lighting in Capture NX2 (or some fill-light or whatever it is called in other RAW-converters).
The pixels seem to take the beating nicely.

24 million pixels on an FX sensor means a pixel pitch of ~ 6 µm.
Basically I'm a fan of big fat pixels and with the present technology I think 24 million pixels on an FX sensor is a quite well balanced compromise between pixel quality and pixel quantity.

A huge thank you to glenerrolrd and ceh for the conversations and your kind and useful advices with regards to the D610's characteristics, before I finally made up my mind.
It was a great help

D610 -- High Noon

And now the crucial "High Noon" 6 µm pixel pitch challenge

First the Scenery at base ISO 100, followed by ISO 1600, 3200 and 6400, all of them just converted from RAW in Capture NX2, no tweaks

You can of course download some of the above RAW files and experiment with applying Noise Reduction in your own favorite RAW converter.
Here is an example with just 1 % Noise Reduction applied in NX2, just to remove (or blur) the top of the Noise in the ISO 6400 file.

I think this Nikon entrance ticket to the FX format is a great tool with a punchy contrast curve and vibrant colors straight out of the box

Thanks, Luis, looks good, you have a powerful and colourful vision

I guess I'm a purist - and maybe too much of a purist - when it comes to postprocessing, it's just that I have this passion for (or is it obsession with ?) subtle colour tones and deep shadows

Of course some of the differences may also have to do with our choices of RAW converters, which RAW converter did you use here ?

Once again thank you for your contribution.

At first glance I thought it might be Karl Isakson, but then, the labels were sharp enough to see its the Swane family at Malergaarden. I have to go there next time I'm at Tuse Näs.
Lovely colours/saturation/light! You don't seem to need a D800E/810, even though Tim's pictures are sparkling/tempting.

No, Antonio, I'm no longer so sure I'm going for the D810 (despite how nice and addictive the high resolution is).
The D810 is pretty much what I have been waiting for, but in the meantime I have become so happy with the D610 that I have more or less decided to just stick with that, at least for now.

The D610 has a punchy contrast curve and vibrant colors straight out of the box, and I really like that as a nice and easy starting point in post processing (don't know how much of this is due to the physical sensor and how much is due to the firmware / camera profile working in the processor).
And so far the autofocus has worked fine for me, I've had no problems at all, then again I haven't exactly shot sports or birds in flight with it.

Admittedly there's a couple of drawbacks with the D610, like no option to program the center OK button to zoom-in to a preset magnification on playback - I mean, it only takes a couple of program lines in the firmware (in other words nothing but the same old stupid camera-crippling strategy, and in my opinion an immensely silly choice).
An AF-ON button and 1/8000 sec shutter speed would also be nice, but I can survive without it.

I would also prefer that it had no blurring filter, but it's not a deal breaker for me despite myself being an incurable pixel peeper.
In a way sharpness is the single most overrated quality in photography (except maybe for macro photography).
And for me the AA-filtering is probably more of a psychological issue.
If I know that someone has put a blurring filter in front of my sensor, I can't keep myself from constantly looking for the influences by zooming into the picture, like when the tongue revolves around a hollow tooth

So the rumored D750 may be a new temptation for me provided it comes without a blurring filter (I don't need the enhanced speed).
It is said to come with the same 24 Mp sensor that I have come to like so much in the D610.
We'll see, it also depends on the price point of the coming D750 or whatever its name will be (the D610 I found at a quite sensible and affordable campaign price).
