Another good one, Michiel. There's no doubt that these window displays coupled with lighting and reflection can produce some very interesting images.

Re: Ricoh GXR - Show your images

Hi all, belated New Year Greeting. Many great photos shared here. I enjoy going through them.

Dec was a busy month for me, plus it's the raining season here. So I have not been doing any shooting. New year eve was a nice sunny day. So decided to go out to take some photos.

This happens to be the very last photo taken on the day, which means it's the last photo taken in 2011:

A mosque taken from a back lane.

This is the front of the mosque:

    Both taken with ZM 28mm.

    Cheers.

I know that San Jose has a totally different climate than wherever YBH. Despite the vastness of CA, it can't be that big a difference (well it could be as well ).

Godfrey, Your winter light is quite a bit processed to your taste isn't it?

YB's cold desolate with contrasty light and your warm desolate with muddled light- BIG difference to me.

All my photographs are processed to my taste, Vivek. I am rarely interested in scenes as recordings, my photos are not accurate to anything but what my mind's eye sees. :-)

Without wanting to seem unduly harsh, Mr. Hudson's photograph seems overly blue and very flat to my eye. I don't know what statement the juxtaposition of a very close up, perspective-distorted tree trunk is trying to make against the few trees and more distant landscape, and the dark shadow on lower left is somewhat distracting.

I walk by this orchard every weekend and see it in all different seasons and weather. The light this morning reminded me of January ... a cool moisture in the air, drops of dew and naked branches glinting harshly against the low-angle light contraposed against the glow of the low angle light through the grass. It all feels cold, contrasty, harsh but not dead. This high clouds against deep blue sky another indicator of space, cold, winter ...

I tone it warm because I prefer to see warm tones rather than blue tones: the tone of little import. The space, the nakedness of the trees, the angle of light and the frosty moisture all say "January, Winter" to my eye.

I can't tell from what you wrote whether it says the same thing to you.

Re: Ricoh GXR - Show your images

Thank you Godfrey for your extensive reply. I did not say anything as to what your picture evoked and Hudson's. I wanted get your take on it (yours) and did not actually ask it. Thanks! Yes, it fits my thoughts perfectly!

On Hudson's image- that takes me much farther than a tree stump with a couple of trees in the back. The shadow in the foreground is essential to the whole picture. I won't explain further. One has to let his/her imagination wander.

    Thanks Michiel

That building and the mural always fascinates me. Most of my shots of it are taken looking up, so I get vertical distortion. This time I used the 28mm and decided to get as close as possible. Still had to process out a bit of leaning vertical, but I was lucky with the reflection in the window.

This is a tree covered with burlap for the winter, heavily backlit by a low winter sun. Used the green P mode on the GXR A12 28mm, jpeg B & W, got as close as possible and pressed the shutter. I am wedded to this camera (don't tell anyone, though )

Keith, this is marvelous! Really love it.

Agnius and Michiel have also posted more stunning photos. I'm behind ... but I did scan 32 new exposures made with the M4-2 last night. That might put me further behind.. ;-)

    Keith,

The stack shot is spot on in my view. I am continually amazed at what you are able to produce with the P10 module. It seems like a lot of people brush it off as not worth much but your photos show it is very capable.

    Thanks bbodine, Godfrey and Michiel

I am very comfortable with the P10. There are a few raving fans on the internet, but I think mostly it get's dismissed, probably without people trying it.
It's definitely better than the Canon G10 that I once had.
We have to remember, Ricoh has to work three times as hard to get its products recognized in North America than other more flashy vendors. Maybe that will soon change.

Well, it seems the A12 Camera Mounts came into stock at several places and are now sold out again ... if that's any indication.

    thanks for looking. comments appreciated.
The location and the subject matter implicitly present a historic contrast: an orchard in what was called the Valley of Heart's Delight, but what now is better known as Silicon Valley. Thus, the photographer makes us play with ideas about the economic development of the location with a twinkle in his eye: no highways, no airplanes, no housing sprawl can be detected in the photo, as if it were a fake of the past. That way, we are reminded that every photography shows only a segment of reality and asks the viewer for its integration.
Furthermore, the viewer is invited to look at the photo not, as the fruit-grower probably would look at his orchard, under the concept of usefulness, but with disinterested pleasure, allowing a free play of his imagination. In this aesthetic perspective the winter light takes its part. It defamiliarizes the orchard which is now no longer one impression at a stretch but is separated into an ensemble of individual trees. Against the winter light we see their filigree branchwood, and their structures become dominant. While nature is presented as waiting for new growth, the imagination of the viewer is set free, funny results included. The historic glimpse reappears when we see the filigree branchwood as an analogon to a file tree. The catchphrase 'from orchard to hard drives' would then sum up the subject of the photo.

Action at muscle beach in Santa Monica - A12 with Contarex 21mm f8 @∞. The more I shoot that lens, the more I like it. My other glass is getting less and less of a workout.

Love these from Muscle Beach, Agnius! Well done!

21mm is a great focal length for APS-C format. I remember discovering how nice it was when I had the Pentax *ist DS and 21mm Limited ... after a three-week photo trip with four lenses, I found I'd made more than 60% of all the exposures with the 21mm. I could probably sell everything but the 21 and 40 mm lenses for this camera and never feel at a loss.

Re: Ricoh GXR - Show your images

Michiel, Glad to see you are finding some colours on these winter days.

I took a few at one of the local picturesque villages here in Fife, the ancient Culross with its brightly coloured buildings always cheers me up.

Another from Culross, this building was once a school that I attended as a child. Now apartments.

Last night's gloaming was rather spectacular:

Love the door, David - composition and color.
