I have tried SP5.5 and can't see the point of its mono conversion ability compared to the far greater versatility of, say, Silver Effex Pro or just Photoshop.

I now use only LR because all is 100% non destructive.

Here is my twist on it:

    Re: Sigma DP2 Merrill shots

    Hello Uwe

sorry for this stupid question, but what's the difference between a stacked copy and a virtual copy in LR ? I have always used the virtual copy when i want to keep my first file, processed where i wanted to be, then start with a new one with more processing, by a virtual copy, and so on...

    Re: Sigma DP2 Merrill shots

    Something really different.

Virtual Copy: Is just a different set of parameters for the same image
Copy: New image processed in one way

Why does the virtual copy not work so well for me? Each image will be different to get to a certain basic color look. This makes it hard to create meaningful B&W presets.

The situation is actually the same as with further editing in Photoshop (without using Smart Objects) or 3rd party plugins. But my B&W work in LR is also non-destructive.

I find the mono mode very irritating, and so slow that it makes informed adjustments very difficult BUT if you can accept the colour shift, moving the Colour Mixer all the way into the blue channel removes a huge amount of noise in high ISO shots, I can't find a way of doing the same in PS,LR or the SE2 demo I have, so for that reason alone 5.5 is useful.

My favourite model, Angus, came to join me today, only when he wanted something of course.

Each shot with my DP2M, either at f2.8 or f4 and a slow shutter of about 1/10th. Good thing for my table-top tripod being handy!

    Re: Sigma DP2 Merrill shots

Again SPP 5.5 mono - LR 4.4 NIK SE 2 (hope its not too boring):

    1. Pic in color

    2. at 100%

    3. Conversion with SPP 5.5

    4. at 100%

    5.Conversion with LR 4.4 and NIK SE2

    6 at 100%

    Tried to get them close.

The SPP conversion is much smoother (Background and the white foam) , i think without loosing detail. Don't know and don't care which one is "better".
    What do you think?

BTW, after deleting all previous files (.plist etc..) and reinstalling, SPP runs much more stable on my MAC.

ISO 6400 B&W DP-2M crop (which was overexposed by two stops, I managed to recover all the highlights using the Exposure slider to -2.0 and adding +0.3-+0.4 fill light):

I can normally tell when spring is around the corner when the shrub at the end of my street puts on its display of blossom. I've photographed it many times over the years and I can honestly say the DP2M has surpassed all the other cameras I have used.

It was hard to choose a single frame, so here are four of them.

Very nice. This camera is like the gift that never stops giving.

It will reward you each and every time you turn it on.

    Beautiful shots, biglouis.

I can't put my finger on it, and you all might think I'm crazy, but the bokeh (strongly out of focus areas) from the Merrill looks....'different' to me than with other cameras. Anybody else see it, or should I just go back into my cave?

    Re: Sigma DP2 Merrill shots

Mezzoduomo, thanks for the comment. Personally, I think the bokeh is very Leica-like. Not necessarily the newer APSH lenses but definitely the more classic pre-asph lenses. I think I shot most of these on the lens sweet spot which for me is f3.2. It was my intention to have the old Georgian door frames and windows as 'hints' in the background, btw. And the bus shot was a pure grab shot.

That's for sure. I started with the 2, then bought the 1. So far, I have been able to resist clicking the BUY button on the DP-3. Not sure how long I can be this strong!

I had the 2 and just purchased the 1.

I'm waiting for the field reports on the 3.

Ultimately the 1 and 3 might be the perfect combo giving a 28-75 range.

But the allure of the image quality the 2 gives will make it hard to part with.

Might just wind up having all 3. I'm greedy.

    Hello all,

I just joined today. Bought a DP1M earlier in the month, thanks Quentin for hooking me. Bought a DP2M and received it on Monday. Now prices dropped $200 to $799, sucker!!!!! OH well, win some lose some. Cameras are awsome image quality. DP1M does have some CA that is difficult to deal with. I do find I have to use a focusing hood for composition.

Looked through the fine stuff posted in my absence and scattered some likes around
Also have to look into the new DP3m....

Back from Cuba. No usable internet to upload anything from there.
Here are some of my first results. Loads of files of this fascinating and tiring country.
I will probably overload you and bore you to death with Cuba photos the coming weeks.

The first and the last are from the city Holguin and the middle one is from the little coast towm Gibara in the North East.

(I will also post on the Ricoh GXR thread on Cuba)

    Hi Michael
Lovely shots! Early morning or late afternoon-light? Late warm light I guess.
Cuba is perhaps one of the few places I would really love to go.
And impressive how they still love Fidel despite of being poor.
Someday you have to tell something about your workflow, while you always get them so nicely clean done!

    Re: Sigma DP2 Merrill shots

    Thank you Thorkil!

My workflow is quiet simple SPP and afterwards ACR and PS.

Not sure if they -all- still love Fidel. (ssst, the man with the beard, don't mention his name)
But they are doing a little better now, then years ago after the Russians suddenly left, with the slowly introduced reforms by Raoul Castro.

Well, there is a lot to be sad about this country but it sure is photogenic, especially for the DP2m wich performs so well on weathered structures.

Here are some more, first two Gibara, last one Holguin.

Thanks Michael. I hope that Raoul keep the changes slow, or we will se all the drawbacks as we have seen almost elsewhere where changes are going on too rapidly and the free marked are pulling criminal activity in the slipstream, together with societys that are social-wise almost splitting apart...
Very nice colours, specially the first with those desert-like dreaming and soft colours.

    Michiel,

Beautiful colors in Cuba series, photography also of course. Reminds me of when I lived in the Bahamas in the 70's. Really enjoyed the tropical colors, palms swaying in the Trade Winds, the Ocean beautiful shades on blue and green. Very relaxed attitudes of "tomorrow Mon, no hurries". Many world travelers in sailboats would run their boats up on the reef and would still be waiting for repairs a year later. On the out islands, people tended to drive on whichever side of the road they felt like.

But I guess it was worth it.
    Yes it was in deed!
Because the lack of maintenance of things it is a perfect country for the textured sensitive Sigma. Less so for the people who have to deal with it, although they manage surprisingly well.

    Re: Sigma DP2 Merrill shots

    My first post here.
I got my DP2 Merrill just before Christmas, and found this site shortly afterwards.
I have been an avid lurker ever since, the athmosphere here is so nice, and I love a lot of the pictures that have been posted here.

It is time I started contributing. I will start with a few pictures I have placed on my web site - they all have a link to a full size jpeg (something I have been looking for before buying, and now to determine whether to get the DP1 and/or DP3):

    Re: Sigma DP2 Merrill shots

Finally the sun came out and we got sone light. Took the DP2M for a stroll through the old harbor (Rhein river) quarter in Mannheim, Germany.
This Quarter once used to be the red light district of Mannheim, was then (some 20 years ago) transformed to an immigrant and ethnic quarter, the red light places all disappeared. Today an other transformation takes place: With the opening of the Pop Academy , Germanys only university teaching Popculture (music), a lot of In places like Bars, Clubs and Galleries moved in. During night it is very lively, and you have a mixture of immigrants and the new in-croud , anarcho and alternative chic....

This is the first and "title" Photo for the following posts:

W.Utch, I like the first one.
BTW: If you like you can use lens correction in ACR or Lightroom at +3 sometimes +4 to correct the bold lines.

Two on the more abstract side.
