This is what I meant in the reply to your last pic, center often is a little boring.^^
    Thank you for your comment!
I try to always follow the rules of composition but for the image with the car centered I didn't had too many options. Anyway it is a crop. I also croped the image with the car off-center, but there is nothing to drive the look towards the subject, so I left it centered.

I miss mine; and the images here are a testament its photographic prowess, but no finder meant that the experience of making an image was never intimate. 45mm EFOV is my favourite walk-around FL, but I must have a finder. If Sigma ever re-release this sensor–lens combo with a finder, I will buy it no matter how expensive.

My thoughts exactly! I also miss a viewfinder!
Have you tried the dedicated Sigma viewfinder? I know it is expensive but it may worth for some. Or you can try another brand.

Re-processing some of my old DP2M files and this one with the pale yellow leaves caught my eye. I missed my Dp2M so just ordered a used one to get back into merrill style shooting again.

Welcome back Carl! I'm also reviewing my archives, the files I shot alongside Sony a850, and discover how much highlight headroom X3F files have! Where a850 sensor clips highlights beyond recovery in RAW, SPP is able to restore not only luma detail, but color as well in areas appearing blown, at iso100! I'm also pleasantly surprised how much abuse can foveon blue channel take compared to Bayer before noise patterns become evident.

Here is an example of color channels clipping and attempt to restore canal color and detail:

My like new condition used DP2M arrived today and I took a few test shots around the house. Working fine and looking forward to getting out to do some more DP2M shooting.

A long exposure shot of a fruit bowl in weak ambient window light. Raw image processed in SPP 6.4 and tif file exported to LR. Only processing in LR was some vignetting.

    Re: Sigma DP2 Merrill shots

I made the mistake of grabbing the DP2M today to take on a walk through a local gorge. Hot with bright blue sky and extremely contrasty lighting in the gorge (at least it was cooler). I didn't salvage any full scenes, even when I shot multi exposures ranging from -2 to +2 for HDR blending. Here is a partial crop from a very narrow section of gorge trail that was shot at -2 EV and then processed for shadow recovery. I usually wait for overcast days to do any gorge shooting but the cool environment in the gorge was just too tempting to ignore.

    Thanks foveon
The difference in brightness is due to a combination of a flash light and exposure settings for the background. I included the image title in the post.

Thanks for the answer, I thought the girl is flashed, but I think that much of difference is confusing, so it looks like a compositing^^

Looking south down the west branch of Keuka Lake from Esperanza Mansion on the bluff that separates the east and west forks of the lake. Notice the verga hanging from some of the clouds. I had to use -2 highlight control to salvage the clouds.

A few shots taken today on a rainy day walk around the marsh at Sapsucker Woods.

Memorial bench at the start of the trail circling the marsh and ponds.

I counted 4 turtles and 5 frogs on the logs in the foreground of this next shot. Look at full size and see how many you can find. The large dead tree in the background was wired for sound and video when it had nesting blue herons a few years ago.

Hi Carl. I was just there in June. I took some photos, but not with my Sigma, it was a film Leica with Tri-X. I have not developed the film yet. The rolls (among others) are sitting in front of my monitor staring at my procrastinating face Digital has me spoiled.

I think I snapped some with the Leica X too. Probably shouldn't post them here and cloud the Faveon waters.

Still looking very good. I have a spare DP2M I have not used except to check everything works. I hope they have improved the performance of the new Quattro HD. The spiritual successor is the Pentax K1 with pixel shift.

    Hello Quentin,

Good to see you on this thread again. There is no doubt, as demonstrated in this thread, about the superb image making of DP2M. This thread is literally crammed full of high quality photographs that put many high end cameras to shame.

You've mentioned the upcoming sd Quattro HD and your hopes for it. I'm afraid I have my doubts as my experience with the dp0Q shows it to be a Jekyll and Hyde camera. Occasionallly, it'll deliver excellent results, possibly better than the Merrill but more often than not, the images are disappointing. The sd Quattro appears to be the same. Here is a link to a Japanese photographer using the sd Quattro that I hope qualifies this statement. http://photo.yodobashi.com/sigma/imp/sdq_02.html

It looks like the sd Quattro will only work well, like the dp0, within a very constricted set of parameters. Perhaps the HD will be different. Who knows?

I too have not used the DP2M for some time. However, as soon as I saw the files comes out of mine on Saturday I was reminded what a fantastic sensor the Foveon/Merrill is. The sky is sky (no blown highlights) and skin tones are realistic. Someone will have to convince me very hard that the SD and SD H can match this. Here's hoping...

I share your concerns. However, with the benefit of further development, maybe Sigma have done something to improve the diabolical issues with the useless original Quattros?

I will give Sigma every chance. They had the Holy Grail with the Merills, and threw it away.

    Appreciate Life

Navigation "UP" button died on my DP2M...
On a positive side, I'm surprised how my DP2M managed to survive in frequent abuse to 90% humidity, 90F temps, direct sunlight and some extra sea salt in the breeze during these past 3 years

Anyone had any mechanical failures with their Merrills? I don't see them mentioned on forums.
