    Re: Sigma DP1 Merrill Shots

Was in Pittsburgh for an early music gig this weekend... cool town! Got a few snaps this morning before flying back to the bayou. ;-)

I worked this up in the airport on my laptop and didn't notice the all the noise from overworking the raw file... I'll clean it up later.

Heinz Chapel... WOW, what a space!

I have the DP2M and just got the DP3M three days ago. I may get that DP1M. I love these cameras.

Not a great shot (handheld, higher ISO)...

... but thought I'd share the case on this organ. I played principal trumpet (historic instruments) with Bach Society Houston yesterday in a performance of J.S. Bach's and C.P.E Bach's Magnificat settings. The organ in the church, Christ the King Lutheran (Houston), is modeled after similar organs built by Hildebrandt during JS Bach's life.

    The builder is Noack. (http://www.noackorgan.com/instruments/?opus=128)

Wonderful to look at and to hear!

    Re: Sigma DP1 Merrill Shots

I've been trying to photograph art - which is really difficult! Here is a first try. And below it a crop. I used the DP1M and flash. Very little work on the 'puter and the colours are pretty close. It's good to see the texture which all of my other attempts with different cameras have not picked up.

    Re: Sigma DP1 Merrill Shots

I just bought a Merrill DP1 and took my first photo. Just a snapshot of part of my home's garden just to try out the camera. I am flabbergasted! What a magnificent little camera. To say I am excited would be an understatement. I took a severe crop from small part of it and the crop is wonderful. Once I work out how to include a photograph on the forums (this is my first post) I will post a copy of the original photo and then the crop. Needless to say I have just ordered a Sigma Merrill DP2 (on sale) and am on the hunt for a DP3.

I certainly along with many enjoy the Merrill's. I find not only for the clarity but I do enjoy the way the sensor interprets the light. At times it can produce a harsh image but most times it can be tamed into something that my other camera's cannot achieve. The Dp1 has become my favourite of the three Merrll's for the 19mm lens. Looking forward to your images.

I finally worked out how to attach photos showing my very first photo with the Sigma Merrill DP1 and the impressive severe crop I made from it. As mentioned previously, the photo is really a snapshot to test the camera's capability. I was impressed.

I should mention that I was so impressed by the Sigma Merrill DP1 that I am also now the proud owner of a Merrill DP2 and DP3 to complete the set.

I think your images are stunning. You seem to have worked some real art into the photos. I notice that you often fade the photos to very dark as the sky in this photo. It is dramatic but how are you doing this? Is it an exposure setting?

I believe your photos are from North Cornwall. I lived in Cornwall for 15 years and wish I had known about Sigma cameras at the time!

ps Are you using graduated filters?

hi Furtle. I am in Cornwall but on the south coast. I do though when able pop across to the North coast which as you are aware is not that far.
The sky in this photo was darkish to begin with. Their was thick mist rolling of the sea which was why I deviated from the road, when seeing the mist, onto the beach to get the shot. I love the light the mist creates.
A professional photographer I met the other day asked me about what I do on my photographs . I dont really know other than I always shoot raw and export the x3f files as tiffs and work on them in Cs6. I have painted for many years and use the ideas that painters use when trying to create a three dimensional illusion on a flat surface. So I simply plod away with those idea which took many years to find through trial and era. Having said that I dont spent six months on a photograph which is possible on a painting.More like six minutes on a photo.
No I dont use graduated filters as a rule, I do have some fine Lee filters, I must use them more and see what can be achieved with them.

Thank you Adrew. I lived in Godolphin. My kids surfed at Porthleven. ('Leven - locals only! Not that we were.)

I wasn't trying to pry just curious as your photos are very striking.

    Keep posting.

Interesting Steven. Not overly familiar with Godolphin, albeit slightly west, I do love visits too the Lizard, but mainly go to the eastern side. Leven I cannot actually remember going too, one of the few places I have not in Cornwall. Maybe that would be an idea to pay it a visit. I am a kind of Local, born here but as they say 'Tis all in ya name me ansome' I have been adopted and a part of the fixtures and fittings now and grumble about the emits in the summer, as any reputable Cornishman does

I've been following your images both here and on Flickr, I thought I'd seen you mostly use the DP3. Its interesting to read you favor the DP1M.

Tim that maybe. I've just viewed how many images from each of the camera's I have posted to the Flickr Albums.
    DP1: 445
    Dp2: 479
    Dp3: 623
I did get the Dp3 some two months before the other two Dp's
The Dp1 cannot do what the Dp3 does and can produce that larger film size format looking image that defies the size sensor it has. That to myself when it works is unbeatable by the D1 or 2.
The Dp1 I did not use as much at first, I'd always preferred and shot a lot using tele lenses, I enjoy the tele lens for landscapes. But I wanted the dp1 primarily for the 28mm lens for social documentary photography, which is around the fishing industry. I've gotten to appreciate the wider focal length for landscapes as well now and how practical 28mm is to carry around. So if I have all three cameras with me the 2&3 stay in the bag and the 1 goes around the neck.
I say that the Dp1 is my favourite it is undoubted the most useful and practical, for what I am doing at the moment.
If I had to choose the one camera from the three, not sure if I could say either Dp1 or 3 I know I could do without the Dp2 if it was prised from my hands .
I take my hat off too you for being more in touch with what I use the most and it has made me think again, statistically you are correct about posting more Dp3 images.
I deliberately went out the other day with the Dp3 as I'd not used it for a while, it was then I became concious that I was using the Dp1 much more of late.
The summer is approaching and and therefore I can see the Dp3 coming out more often than it has been.

one of those shots that is impossible without a wide lens, where you use the distortion as a part of the composition.
