Foveon Sensor, SPP Monochrome - Images

It's time to really explore the Monochrome tab in SPP. I'll get the ball rolling with a picture from a construction site that I pass each day on my way to work.

    DP1 Merrill, ISO 400, f11, 1/250.

Typically Dutch Black and White / Sigma DP2 'original'

I passed these cows today on my way to work, they are really cute and curious animals so they decided to come and visit me by the fence. A good opportunity to take out the camera and see how this scene would look in a monochrome white balance. Actually i like it this way, although the colour version looks nice too! It was a good feeling trying to connect to these animals

I hope a non Merrill is OK here?

I noticed there's a difference in output between LR & SPP when converting B&W images from RAW to JPG.
Here's sample SPP straight to JPG:
    Attachment 72399

Here's SPP save as TIFF 16-bit, import to LR, then export as JPG:
    Attachment 72400

The difference in contrast is noticeable in LR preview when compared to SPP.

    London, Mayfair (off Berkeley Square)

Really like the Monochrome Mode in SPP ( as SPP is not bad in general )

I don't have a DP camera, but I downloaded SPP and some merrill RAWs to play with, and the new monochrome mode is impressive. It definitely improves or removes banding, even in ISO 3200 shots. The 100% files have a great look once processed.

The DP1M images shown here, dare I say, seem as good as a Leica MM. The Foveon sensor is really quite amazing.

Totally new to posting images, and can't seem to get this to work. Any advice for a novice (two test images from Kenya with DP2m linked here). Cheers, Andre.

    Hi Andre,

I use tinypic.com. Upload the image to tinypic, then copy/past the 'IMG Code for Forums & Message Boards' link into your post here.

Re: Foveon Sensor, SPP Monochrome - Images

I'm starting to look at alternatives to ACR/CS6 for B&W. On the Sigma Best Practices thread it was suggested that I should try Silver Efex Pro 2 for B&W. After a bit a research I think I'll try SEP2. This tool seems to give even more control over the color channels than ACR/CS6 for changing individual tones. For my DPM images I've tried using SPP Monochrome, but I find the lack of adjustments to individual color channels too limiting and a have greater range of personal tuning with ACR/CS6 (and even more I assume with SEP2). Have others compared these alternatives?

Well, I feel that I've got to raise darr's lighthouse with another one. This is a photo of the lighthouse 'on' Little St. George Island. It's of historical interest because it fell over about two months later! They fished most of the bricks out of the gulf and have rebuilt it on SGI . It's been several years since we've been back to the island and this is one of my favorite places in the world...

Lovely 'historic' shot you posted Kofronj!

Now the SGI lighthouse welcomes you from the drive off the causeway at East Gulf Beach Drive. I do not get down there all that often anymore (2 hours away), but have shot some great dune scenes from there. St. Marks (SM) is close to me and is a great place to try out a new camera. I am totally new to the DP1 Merrill camera and the SM lighthouse and scenics I took during the shoot are the first shots I have made with the camera. So far I am loving it, just have to learn how to shoot in the sun.
