3880 won't print...

...shows "no ink cartridge installed". ? All the ink cartridge level indicators are blinking. I had a cartridge which was down to 2% remaining and it wouldn't print so I installed a new cartridge. In the past I could run them completely out and replace in the middle of printing. So a bit bumfuzzled.
Anyone else had this problem?
