Hello guys, Is it possible to hook two computers by firewire to two different computers? Basically I would use some sort of firewire hub to connect the devices together. Is this doable?

Not sure if it can be done with more than one but if they are macs you use one as an external hard drive by setting one of them to target disk mode.(but you probably knew that already) It would be better to get a small LAN network hub though, and they are pretty cheap.

Quote from mac forums

"go to Network prefs and disable all interfaces except FireWire. You can then use File Sharing normally. AppleTalk is not needed and should be left off; it is an old networking protocol from the 1980s and is only included for backwards compatibility with OS 9 Macs. Macs have transitioned to TCP/IP like everybody else. You will notice that the linked tech note does not mention AppleTalk at all.

FYI - Windows dropped support for IP over FireWire in Vista. Too bad for them."

Will has said it all.....a usb hub seems a better approach. However if you want to avoid that 'investment', using firewire and target disk mode would work to a lesser extent, and they do say that firewire supports daisy chaining. But then you'd have one computer 'live' and the other three 'dozing' in target disk mode.
I'm considering a powered usb hub for the additional flexibility.

the immediate question is why are you trying to do this?... what are you trying to achieve?

sounds like ethernet networking would be the way to go... so why firewire?

also whether they are macs or PC's may have an influence on the situation
